Young Sheldon Season 7 Episode 3 recap: Secrets, lies, and letters

Young Sheldon Season 7 Episode 3 recap: Secrets, lies, and letters

When your intelligence is humbled, it’s time to act out—or at least that’s what Young Sheldon Season 7 Episode 3 suggests. Here’s the full rundown.
When we last saw the genius Cooper child in Young Sheldon, all was a little unsettled. During Episode 2, Sheldon’s new German professor suggested that he needed urgent tutoring, bringing his belief of being academically unstoppable crashing down around him.

While Mary reveled in the idea of Sheldon being tutored, there have been bigger fish to fry back home in Texas. After the devastating tornado in Season 6, the rest of the Coopers have been working to get their lives back on track—with surprising results.
Now that both sides of the pond seem a little more settled, here’s a full rundown of everything that happened in Young Sheldon Season 7 Episode 3. Obviously, spoilers ahead.

Young Sheldon Season 7 Episode 3: Sheldon strikes out

Now that Sheldon has been so publicly humbled in the classroom, the last thing he wants to do is spend more time there. Desperate to explore Germany by train, he begs Mary to let him venture out on his own—who quickly shuts him down. Studying the train schedule in secret, Sheldon tells Mary he’s spending the day at the library before buying a ticket and setting off on an all-day train ride.

Although this starts out well, things take a turn for the worse when Sheldon makes a stop to get strudel while the train is stationary. It suddenly moves off with Sheldon’s backpack still on the passenger seat, leaving him stranded in the middle of nowhere without any help. Missy only shuts him down when Sheldon tries to phone for help, so he instead tries to sweet talk two police officers into giving him a ride home. When they decide they don’t want to be stuck with his incessant babbling, Sheldon has to walk, getting attacked by a dachshund on the way.

By the time Sheldon gets back, Mary has been debriefed on the situation by Missy—although she doesn’t take note of the details. Only admitting to the dog attack, Mary decides to make Sheldon sweat by thinking that he’s got away with it, letting the guilt eat him up from the inside.

The Coopers fall in love with letters

When George decides that the phone bill is too expensive in Young Sheldon Season 7 Episode 3, he writes Mary a letter to save on expenses. She takes this as a positive surprise, reminiscing on George’s time in the army while she responds. The two start a regular back-and-forth exchange that dissolves into a love affair through letters, with George enclosing polaroids of what Mary is missing back at home.

With all of the romance and success Mary and George are experiencing through their correspondence, the rest of the Cooper brood decide to try their hand at it too. Meemaw mails Mary after being annoyed that she hasn’t received anything from her daughter, while Georgie tries to sweet talk Mandy with a romantic letter that verges on being creepy.

Missy rebels yet again

While Episodes 1 and 2 of Young Sheldon Season 7 saw Missy in a more matriarchal role, she’s firmly back to her old teenage antics in Episode 3. Missy tells George that she has a new friend called Taylor, getting dressed up to go with them to the mall or the movies. George assumes that Taylor is a girl and has no issue with it – until one of Mary’s letters asks if Taylor is a boy or a girl, making George furious.

Missy tells George that he doesn’t need to worry because despite Taylor being a boy, he is gay. This turns out to be a complete lie to get George off of her back, with Taylor officially introduced as Missy’s boyfriend as the pair are seen kissing on his sofa. Missy explains what she told George, with Taylor not seeming to care at all.

Meemaw gets serious with Dale

Meemaw has officially flown the nest (again) by moving in with boyfriend Dale after the tornado. Previous episodes have shown that this is something she’s incredibly hesitant about, explaining why she initially moved in with her family after losing her house. All is not off to a good start with the couple’s new living arrangements, as Dale’s repetitive guitar playing instantly annoys Meemaw—particularly because he plays the same Johnny Cash song over and over.

This doesn’t mean Meemaw is without fault though, as Dale learns that she snores through the night. Trying to spray her nose before waking her up, she sees it as an invasion of privacy and counters that Dale farts just as much through the night. When Dale offers to sleep in another room, Meemaw tries to work something out, resulting in earmuffs, a fan, and a symphony of snoring and farting (which is probably one of Young Sheldon’s more memorable exits).
