Is Robert Clohessy Leaving Blue Bloods? (Rumors Explained)

He’s been a regular since the show began, but is Robert Clohessy leaving Blue Bloods? CBS’s long-running police procedural drama Blue Bloods revolves around the Reagans, a New York City family who all work in law enforcement. The Reagan clan is headed by patriarch and police commissioner Frank (Tom Selleck) and also includes his district attorney daughter Erin (Bridget Moynahan), eldest son and NYPD detective Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) and his youngest son Jamie (Will Estes), a sergeant in the NYPD.

The main cast of Blue Bloods is bolstered by a strong supporting cast which includes Robert Clohessy as Lieutenant Sidney “Sid” Gormley. A recurring character since the very first season, Sid started out as a detective sergeant who supervised the Bronx’s 54th Precinct Detective Squad where he was Danny Reagan’s superior. In Blue Bloods season 5, however, Sid was reassigned to serve as Special Assistant to the Commissioner at the NYPD headquarters at One Police Plaza, which made him part of Reagan’s inner advisory circle.

Despite his status, several viewers wondered whether Robert Clohessy might be leaving Blue Bloods after his character was involved in a couple of worrying plotlines during the eleventh season. During the episode “For Whom The Bell Tolls”, Sid was under a lot of stress and it was revealed he was struggling with depression after his long-time former police partner had died without him getting a chance to say goodbye or attend his funeral. In a later episode titled “Guardian Angels”, Sid faced more turmoil when unsealed records revealed he’d had complaints made against him decades earlier for using excessive force and his career looked to be in jeopardy.

Fans Are Worried That Robert Clohessy Is Leaving 'Blue Bloods'

Given Sid’s personal and professional problems, fans of Blue Bloods speculated it could be a sign Sid’s time on the show was over and that Clohessy was moving on to other acting work. However, those worries turned out to be unfounded when Sid remained a recurring character throughout the show’s most recent twelfth season which concluded in 2022. Clohessy also appeared in a post made on Instagram by co-star Abigail Hawk in which the pair – along with fellow cast member Gregory Jbara – celebrated the show getting renewed for a thirteenth season by hilariously attempting to do the Beyonce “Drop Challenge.”

Interestingly – according to an interview Clohessy gave to Main Street Magazine – Sid was supposed to be a one-off character but thanks to Clohessy’s chemistry with the Blue Bloods cast he was promoted to series regular. Judging from his participation in Hawk’s post about the season 13 renewal, it looks like both Robert Clohessy and his Blue Bloods character will be returning for the show’s upcoming season too.
