Is Chicago Fire in danger of being canceled by NBC?

It’s a strange time to be a fan of NBC’s One Chicago dramas. For the past few years, we’ve been able to sit back without any concern for the shows’ futures thanks to NBC’s decision to hand out multi-season renewals to Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago PD back in early 2020.

In handing out those super-sized renewals, fans haven’t had to worry about any of the shows as the past three televisions have unfolded. However, this year has been a different story due to the fact that the three series are in the final season of their three-season renewals.

As a result, the shows’ futures are up on the air for the first time in years as none of the three shows have been renewed yet by the network.

Has Chicago Fire been canceled?

The good news is that Chicago Fire and its sister series have not been canceled by NBC and remain very much in contention for a spot on the 2023-24 primetime schedule. While the shows are in their final seasons from the 3-year renewal NBC handed out in 2020, the One Chicago dramas have not been announced to be ending with their current season.

Instead, the shows all remain on the bubble along with the majority of NBC’s primetime series and are waiting to learn their fate.

Is Chicago Fire in danger?

Although no show is ever truly safe from cancellation, we don’t see any scenario in which NBC would cancel Chicago Fire. Despite being in its eleventh season, the series remains one of NBC’s most popular shows. In fact, this season Chicago Fire ranks as NBC’s most-watched primetime series of the 2022-23 season thus far.

Given the show’s ratings remain strong as does fan interest in the show, it’s looking incredibly likely NBC will renew Chicago Fire. What will be most interesting is to see if NBC will choose to renew the show for one season or if it will hand out another multi-season renewal, which would help lock the show down for another few years.

We should hopefully learn the fate of the show in early 2023, perhaps around February or close to NBC’s Winter Television Critics Association presentation.
