Friends: Most Heartbreaking Moments in the Serie

Pheobe with tripletsFriends was intrinsically a comedy show, but it had several heartbreaking moments. Here are 10 of them.
Friends is inherently a comedy series that tells the tales of six friends trying to make ends meet in the busy streets of New York from their early-20s to early-30s. Undoubtedly, casting talents like Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, and Matthew Perry did a spectacular job of delivering jokes that made fans smile a little longer and tickled the funny bones of the audience. Apart from that, the sitcom even epitomizes romance in its own cute way.

That being said, Friends isn’t all about happiness and fun. Reflecting this tumultuous time in every new adult’s life, there are several tear-jerking moments in Friends. Here are some of the most heartbreaking moments in the series.

If there is one moment in the entire sitcom that can still make fans teary-eyed, then it has to be none other than the break-up between Ross and Rachel. Indeed, fans of Friends saw the rocky journey of two acquaintances blossoming into the most beautiful couple. Unfortunately, like many good things, it didn’t last and the couple broke up shortly after getting together. Truly, this heartbreaking moment brought to a close a story arc that fans had been hoping for in Friends’ early seasons.

In addition to romance and comedy, Friends naturally dove into platonic love, specifically the bromance between Joey and Chandler. One of the defining, heartbreaking moments in their relationship comes when Joey moves out of Chandler’s apartment. Indeed, through several episodes, fans saw both characters living through thick and thin, and then, one fine day even the thought of them not being present for each other as roommates was something hard to digest. Unfortunately, that happens for a brief amount of time, and everyone could agree it was so sad to watch.

Ross was a hopeless romantic. And if he had true feelings for anybody apart from Rachel, then it had to have been none other than Emily. In fact, they were set to get married! Yes, Emily was controlling and a little too much to handle, but she loved Ross and was always an undying source of happiness and energy for him. So, seeing such a character thrown out of the equation was heartbreaking and emotional for both Ross and Friends fans. Of course, some were really happy to see her depart, but it was nonetheless a sad experience for Ross.

Pheobe was one such character in Friends who sadly was never in a stable relationship until later in the series. However, when she became a surrogate mom to her brother’s triplets, there was a whole new side of Phoebe that nobody knew existed. Sadly, that journey came to an end, too. After growing them in her womb, Phoebe had to give up the triplets, even though she wanted to raise one by herself. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as she wished, but the scene where she delivers a heartfelt speech to the triplets was one of the most emotional in the series.
