Young Sheldon Season 7 Premiere Date, Plot, Cast, Trailer & News to Know

Young Sheldon Season 7 will be its last, and it’ll fundamentally change the Cooper family dynamics. Here’s everything to know about the final season.

The Big Bang Theory was one of the most applauded comedy series by viewers during its 12-season run, having achieved an average of over 17 million views in its final season. Its spinoff, Young Sheldon, won’t meet the longevity The Big Bang Theory did. But its own final season is expected to touch the hearts of the millions watching.
The announcement that Season 7 would be Young Sheldon’s final season was met with disappointment by some fans, but it wasn’t a surprise. The series only received a three-year renewal back in 2021 by CBS, and it was always expected to end around the time Sheldon Cooper turned 14 years old, as his father, George Cooper, died at that point. Continuing the story without George wouldn’t be right considering he’s an integral piece of the Cooper puzzle. With Sheldon off to Germany, Georgie becoming a father, and George and Mary’s relationship on the rocks, Young Sheldon Season 7 has many loose ends to tie up in 2024.

When and Where to Watch Young Sheldon Season 7

The final season of Young Sheldon will air on CBS, beginning on Feb. 15, 2024. After the premiere, each episode will premiere every Thursday at 8:00 p.m. ET on the network. For fans who want to catch up, they can stream all six seasons on Max, or with the Max add-on subscription through Hulu and Amazon Prime Video. The series has also been available to stream on Netflix since late 2023.

With the 2023 actors and writers’ strikes in the middle of the year, many shows were forced to pause production to support workers. While the strikes largely didn’t affect the premiere date of the seventh season, it did change how many episodes will be released. Typically, each season of Young Sheldon has 21–22 episodes, with Season 4 having 18 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Season 7 will be the shortest due to the strikes, airing only 14 episodes. There is, however, an upside: airing on May 16, 2024, Young Sheldon’s series finale will be an hour long.

Who Will Be in Young Sheldon’s Seventh and Final Season?

For the most part, Young Sheldon’s core cast has stayed consistent throughout its seven seasons. The Cooper family, through all their trials and tribulations, is hard to break. While there’s no official casting announcement for the seventh season, it’s easy to deduce that the main Cooper family — Sheldon, Mary, George, Georgie, Missy and Connie — will return to finish their stories. But there are also a couple of new members to the dysfunctional bunch: Mandy McAllister is now engaged to Georgie, and they have a newborn daughter named Constance.

Even the supporting cast has remained a staple on Young Sheldon. Expected to return are Connie’s current boyfriend Dale (Craig T. Nelson), Pastor Jeff (Matt Hobby), Dr. John Sturgis (Wallace Shawn) and Dr. Grant Linkletter (Ed Begley Jr.). Dr. Linkletter’s role in the final season is a wild card, as his main purpose is to provide comic relief while Sheldon is at university and to romantically pursue Connie. But since Sheldon is in Germany, Young Sheldon may have to find another reason to keep Dr. Linkletter around, which is always welcomed.

Other characters that must return for the sake of the story are Brenda Sparks and Pastor Rob, both of whom become emotionally entangled with George and Mary. George’s affair is imminent due to it being a canon event in The Big Bang Theory, and all signs point to George sleeping with Brenda. But Mary hasn’t been entirely innocent either, as she’s had fantasies about pursuing Pastor Rob when her marriage loses its spark. Pastor Rob still has a choice to make about a potential job in Arkansas, so Season 7 will likely give him a chance to make a decision based on his friendship with Mary.
Being the final season, past supporting characters may appear to say a final goodbye. McKenna Grace’s Paige only appears in a handful of episodes per season, but she’s been a dependable rock for Sheldon to rival or Missy to get in mischief with. While Tam hasn’t been on the show since Season 4, The Big Bang Theory does confirm that the two made a pact to be roommates in California. Tam ends up breaking the promise, but Young Sheldon has yet to show the former friends swear on it in the first place.

Is There a Trailer for Young Sheldon Season 7?

Young Sheldon has yet to release a trailer with any new footage of the final season. But CBS put out a “What Comes Next” trailer, recapping the events of Season 6 that will play an integral part of Season 7. The main storylines of Season 6 that are featured in the trailer are Mary and Sheldon heading off to Germany, a tornado destroying Connie’s house and the birth of Georgie and Mandy’s baby. The trailer also shows George and Mary confronting each other about potential emotional affairs, hinting that long-distance might not work for the strained couple in Season 7.

What Are the Story Details of Young Sheldon Season 7?

Nothing’s been confirmed about the plot of Season 7 yet, but given the trailer and the Young Sheldon Season 6 finale, there’s enough to pinpoint where Young Sheldon is heading. The sixth season ends on the note of the family helping Connie as they recover lost cash from her destroyed home. Now that Connie is the successful owner of two illegal businesses, the loss of that money and her home may mean legal trouble in her future. Pastor Jeff also now has knowledge of these businesses, and has taken drastic steps in the past to shut down her video store due to “un-Christian content.” While he’s promised to keep quiet, he may still be a thorn in her side.

Georgie and Mandy look like they have a bright future ahead of them, now being engaged and with a baby. A voiceover in a past season confirms that Georgie did actually get married very young, so it’s likely Mandy is the bride. But Georgie will end up having many wives and girlfriends in the future, so the age gap between Mandy and Georgie will eventually come back to haunt them. Missy too has trouble waiting for her, since she’s been on a rebellious streak since Season 6. For the past couple of seasons, Sheldon’s own story has taken a backseat as the series slowly transitions from a comedy into a tragedy.

Sheldon’s trip to Germany for a prestigious summer program is trivial compared to Mary and George’s relationship, which is crumbling by the minute. But as Big Bang Theory viewers know, George and Mary never divorced. They seemingly stuck it out despite George’s affair because they’ve seen what divorce does to children, and they already have a bad reputation in their Christian town. Aside from the affair that Sheldon claims he witnessed himself, the moment everyone is dreading is George’s eventual death. He dies of a heart attack when Sheldon is 14, and Young Sheldon has already been preparing viewers for this moment with two near-death scenes in the series. With an hour-long finale on its way, the clock is ticking for the devastating moment in the Cooper family.
