Remembering beloved ‘Friends’ actor Matthew Perry through some of his character Chandler Bing’s best moments

Could he be any more memorable?

As Chandler Bing, Matthew Perry brought the dry humor to Friends, often at his character’s own expense. The beleaguered Bing went through jobs and relationships, though found a happy ending when the series wound down alongside wife Monica Geller (Courteney Cox) and their twin babies.

In his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, Perry wrote about how his own unique manner of speech affected his work as Chandler.

“I read the words in an unexpected fashion, hitting emphases that no one else had hit,” he wrote. “I was back in Ottawa with my childhood friends the Murrays; I got Laughed where no one else had.”

“It was as if someone had followed me around for a year, stealing my jokes, copying my mannerisms, photocopying my world-weary yet witty view of life,” he continued of reading the Friends script. “It wasn’t that I thought I could play ‘Chandler’; I was Chandler.”

Season 4, Episode 12: “The One with the Embryos”

A guessing game gone off the rails — involving Joey and Chandler’s pet chick and duck — ends with the fact that no one knew what Chandler did for a living. But the sad fact came with a bonus: the guys got Monica and Rachel’s swanky apartment.

Season 2, Episode 13: “The One After the Superbowl: Part 2”

Matthew Perry and Julia Roberts on Friends. Any post-Super Bowl show is usually bound to be a winner, and this one didn’t disappoint, bringing in guest star Julia Roberts — who was actually Perry’s off-screen girlfriend at the time, he revealed in 2022.

For the episode, she played Susie Moss, his old classmate, who taunted him by leaving him basically naked in a bathroom, getting revenge for an embarrassing moment he caused her in elementary school.

Watching the friends figure out one by one that Monica and Chandler were an item over the course of two episodes was a delight for fans, letting each character “have a little fun of our own,” as Phoebe said before a rendezvous fake-out.
