Kevin Costner’s Next Movie Revealed As Western Epic Awaits Release

With both Horizon: An American Saga installments still months away from releasing, star and director Kevin Costner has now lined up his next movie.

Kevin Costner now has his next movie in his sights following Horizon: An American Saga. After a string of hits in the ’80s and ’90s like SilveradoDances With WolvesRobin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and The Bodyguard, Costner will now be best known to many modern audiences for his starring role in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone. With his role in the neo-Western series in the rearview after some behind-the-scenes squabbles, the actor is gearing up to release Horizon: An American Saga, a two-part epic that he writes, directs, produces, and stars in.

With the Horizon: An American Saga release date still months away, Deadline now reveals that Costner has already lined up his next film, which he will star in and produce. The movie doesn’t yet have a title or plot details, but it will be directed by Ariel Vromen, who previously collaborated with Costner on 2016’s Criminal. Vromen calls the movie a “longtime passion project” of Costner’s. The film is expected to begin production in early 2025, with no release date currently set.

Yellowstone, Horizon: An American Saga & More

After playing John Dutton in four and a half seasons of Yellowstone, behind-the-scenes troubles between Costner and Sheridan began to emerge. While some of this drama stemmed from the creative direction of the show and Costner’s character, it reportedly was just as much about the Yellowstone filming schedule. Costner, reports claim, was prioritizing Horizon: An American Saga over the hit Western series, and he now seemingly won’t be returning for Yellowstone season 5 part 2.

Horizon is a long-gestating passion project for Costner, who first conceived of the idea for the Western epic in 1988. The two-part experience, which Costner hopes to turn into a four-part one covering 15 years of American history in the West before and after the Civil War, has largely been independently financed, with each of the first two installments boasting a $100 million budget.

It’s since been reported that Costner has been having trouble securing funding for the remaining two Horizon installments. Big-budget Westerns, after all, represent a significant risk in today’s entertainment landscape, and the fact that the first two installments are releasing in theaters only seven weeks apart is itself fairly unprecedented. With Costner‘s new movie targetting a 2025 production start, it’s looking like the actor won’t be able to tackle the final two Horizon movies until later next year, if indeed they happen at all.
