Game Of Thrones: Daenerys Targaryen’s 10 Best Friends In The Series

Daenerys Targaryen made a lot of enemies on Game of Thrones, but she also had plenty of great friends throughout her journey to becoming queen.

Daenerys Targaryen was one of the most powerful characters on Game of Thrones, so unsurprisingly, she gained a lot of enemies over the course of the series. But she also had plenty of loyal and supportive allies that helped her throughout her journey.

While she had a few romantic relationships over time, it was the friendships Daenerys formed that really mattered. These people brought out the best in her, challenged her decisions, and believed in her as a ruler. While not all of these relationships ended well, they provided Daenerys with some much-needed buddies.

Olenna Tyrell

Daenerys first met Olenna late in the series when the matriarch joined her campaign for the Iron Throne. Though their time together was short before Olenna’s death, she proved to be the kind of honest and straightforward advisor Daenerys needed.

Olenna had always been blunt and didn’t hide the fact that she was largely unimpressed with Daenerys. But she also imparted her own wisdom on the young would-be queen, encouraging her to ignore those around her and embrace her dragon nature. Had Olenna survived longer, Daenerys might have won the Iron Throne.

Irri

Following the death of Khal Drogo, most of his Dothraki army abandoned Daenerys, but there were a few who remained by her side. Irri was amongst those who stayed and followed Daenerys’s early campaign to rule. She was also one of the first people to teach Daenerys about Dothraki culture.

Daenerys and Irri didn’t have as much time to enjoy their friendship, but Irri helped to show Daenerys that warriors and rulers weren’t the only people who could offer helpful advice and support.

Daario Naharis

Daario Naharis was a number of things to Daenerys, including a romantic partner and a warrior. But there were times when these two would speak informally to each other and it became obvious that he offered a type of friendship that Daenerys desperately needed.

Daario had a carefree approach to life, and when they were alone together, he helped Daenerys not take things so seriously. He even made her laugh which is more than most of her allies could say. Though she left him eventually, her time with Daario helped keep her from being consumed by her darker side.

Rakharo

Another Dothraki member, Rakharo was a brave warrior who served as a bodyguard to Daenerys. He quickly made himself likable when he nearly killed Daenerys’s evil brother Viserys for attacking her. Like Irri, he remained loyal to Daenerys and became her bloodrider just as he did for Drogo.

Though he is not Daenerys’s only bloodrider, Rakhor was the one she trusted the most and the one who apprehended the would-be assassin who attempted to poison her. Rakhor and Daenerys shared a strong bond beyond his role to protect her and he was another example of how Daenerys found a family among the Dothraki people.

Tyrion Lannister

Though Daenerys hated the Lannisters, Tyrion Lannister was also not fond of his family, which made them ideal allies. Despite some initial friction, their relationship improved quickly as they both seemed to bring out the best in each other. Tyrion helped Daenerys avoid her crueler tendencies while she gave him the respect he never got from his family.

It is true their relationship didn’t end well, with Tyrion making some bad political decisions and Daenerys turning murderous. But for a time, these two made for a strong pair who nearly won the Iron Throne together.

Jon Snow

Most people could see the romance between Jon Snow and Daenerys was doomed from the start, but before that, they seemed to be formidable allies. Despite their respective mistakes, these two were the heroes of most of the series and they were drawn to those good traits in each other.

From going Beyond the Wall to fight the White Walkers to putting aside their differences with others to save Westeros, they were true heroes when working together. Had they avoided the romance, they might have helped make Westeros better than ever.

Barristan Selmy

After serving lackluster kings like Robert Baratheon and Joffrey Baratheon, legendary knight Barristan Selmy seeks out Daenerys to serve her. Given his legendary status, Daenerys accepted Barristan to her team and he became somewhat of a paternal figure to her.

Barristan served the Targaryen’s in the past and he was able to offer Daenerys lessons from her relatives. He told her of how noble and kind her brother Rhaegar was while not shying away from how brutal her father became. It is clear that Daenerys treasured having someone close to her that remembered the family she never had a chance to know.

Grey Worm

After being freed as a member of the Unsullied, Grey Worm saw Daenerys as a savior and became her most passionate follower. Though he was not as much of an advisor as the others in her inner circle, Grey Worm wholeheartedly believed in Daenerys as a ruler.

In the final episodes of the series, Grey Worm showed just how devoted he was to Daenerys as he was willing to kill anyone to ensure she took the throne. While other allies left her (or died), Grey Worm followed the same dark path Daenerys took.

Missandei

Most of the people in Daenerys’s inner circle felt like followers whose company she happened to enjoy. But Missandei was a genuine friend for Daenerys. She served as Daenerys’s handmaiden and was another ally who believed her queen could do no wrong. But Missandei was also someone Daenerys could just talk to outside of conquering cities.

Like true friends, Missandei and Daenerys discussed their love lives, teased each other, and were endlessly supportive. It is not surprising that Missandei’s shocking and cruel death is the final thing that pushed Daenerys to take King’s Landing by brutal force.

Jorah Mormont

Jorah Mormont was often made the butt of jokes over his unrequited love for Daenerys. But despite the fact that she was clearly not interested in him as a romantic partner, his respect for her never diminished. He was not as blind a follower as others, as he did give Daenerys the hard truths while staying by her side.

Even when he was cast aside, Jorah showed the amazing lengths he would go to for her, from capturing Tyrion to becoming a gladiator to curing himself of greyscale. In turn, Daenerys saw Jorah as her most trusted friend and the only person she shared this journey with from the beginning.
