Game Of Thrones Cast – Where Are They Now?

The Game of Thrones cast was one of the best ensembles in TV history, with many actors continuing to deliver impressive performances after its ending.

The HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones gave its cast breakthrough roles and career-defining characters to play over eight seasons. Casting directors Nina Gold and Robert Sterne were tasked with assembling the Game of Thrones cast for the pilot beginning in 2009. Only actors Peter Dinklage and Sean Bean were offered their roles upfront. The other dozens of actors making up the main Game of Thrones cast had to earn their spots through readings and screen tests.

While the original unaired Game of Thrones pilot led to recasting key roles, the show eventually found its lineup. The show perfectly blended complete unknowns and young actors with seasoned character actors to create an award-winning ensemble. Since Game of Thrones ended in 2019, some cast members have taken on completely different roles while others have left the door open to return to Westeros.

Game of Thrones Star Lena Headey’s New Sci-Fi Series From Silo Author Gets Premiere Date

18.Emilia Clarke – Daenerys Targaryen

Daenerys Targaryen With Her Faithful Soldier Ready To Rule Her New World

No Game of Thrones cast member went through a greater transformation than Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen. Her journey began in an arranged marriage to the Dothraki warlord Khal Drogo and ended as queen of the Seven Kingdoms. Although her ending was tragic, Daenerys endures as one of television’s most memorable characters. Clarke has entered other franchises outside of Game of Thrones, playing Qi’ra in Solo: A Star Wars Story and G’iah in Marvel’s Secret Invasion. She also produced and starred in the 2023 science-fiction rom-com The Pod Generation.

17.Sophie Turner – Sansa Stark

Sansa Stark crowned the Queen of the North

Sophie Turner’s Game of Thrones character, Sansa Stark, got what she wanted when she became a queen at series’ end. After being used as a pawn by the Lannisters and Littlefinger, she took control of her destiny and became queen of Winterfell. Turner has yet to find the same level of success outside Game of Thrones. Her two-film run as Jean Grey in the X-Men franchise didn’t quite pan out. She had a main role in the 2022 miniseries The Staircase. In 2023, Turner is filming the starring role in the British series Joan based on the life of notorious jewel thief Joan Hannington.

16.Maisie Williams – Arya Stark

Arya Stark With Her Sword Practicing In A Field

Dreaming of knighthood, Arya Stark was on her own after Ned’s execution. She trained with the Faceless Men and traveled with The Hound before enacting revenge on House Frey for the Red Wedding. Returning home, Arya defended the realm in the Battle of Winterfell and killed the Night King. She finished the series intent on seeing what lies west of Westeros. Actress Maisie Williams starred in the final Sony X-Men film New Mutants, but the movie fell flat. On television, Williams tackled miniseries Two Weeks to Live and Pistol. Her next role is as Catherine Dior, sister of fashion designer Christian Dior, in the AppleTV+ series The New Look.

15.Lena Headey – Cersei Lannister

Cersei Lannister looking annoyed in Game of Thrones

Cersei Lannister was a constant antagonist throughout Game of Thrones. She was at odds with every major character, including her brother and lover Jaime. Cersei relentlessly pulled whatever string necessary to keep her family in power. By season 7, she ruled over Westeros. She ultimately died in the crumbling Red Keep during Daenerys’ attack on King’s Landing. Post-Game of Thrones, Lena Headey has starred in dramas such as TwistGunpowder Milkshake, and 9 Bullets. She has performed as a voice actor in the animated series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and Masters of the Universe: Revelation. Headey had a starring role in the 2023 HBO miniseries White House Plumbers.

14.Kit Harington – Jon Snow

Jon Snow looking sad in Game of Thrones season 8

Arguably Game of Thrones‘ main character, Jon Snow became a fan-favorite. First, he defended the Wall, and he later returned south to warn the Seven Kingdoms about the Night King. Through death, resurrection, the Battle of the Bastards, and more, Snow became a heroic figure. His secret Targaryen lineage complicated his relationship with Daenerys, and ultimately, it was Jon who killed the Mother of Dragons. Game of Thrones ended with Jon exiled to the Night’s Watch. After, Kit Harington joined the MCU as Dane Whitman in Eternals. On TV, he was featured in Extrapolations and Modern Love. Now, Harington is developing a Game of Thrones spinoff centered on Jon Snow.

13.Pedro Pascal – Oberyn Martell

Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones

Oberyn Martell joined the cast of Game of Thrones in season 4, arriving in King’s Landing bent on revenge for crimes against his family. He served on the jury during Tyrion’s trial and acted as his champion in a trial by combat against The Mountain. Oberyn suffered a gruesome death but not before becoming one of Game of Thrones‘ best characters. Perhaps no other actor has had more success outside the show than Pedro Pascal. He leads two critically acclaimed series: The Mandalorian and The Last of Us. His upcoming films include the Ethan Coen-directed Drive-Away Dolls and Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2.

12.Richard Madden – Robb Stark

Robb Stark looking intently while in a room full of people in Game of Thrones.

Robb Stark grew up quickly on Game of Thrones, becoming Lord of Winterfell and leading the Northern bannermen into war following his father’s death. He proved to be an underestimated military leader and won several key victories. However, it was the politics and backstabbing in Westeros that sealed his fate. Robb died alongside his mother, wife, and unborn child at the Red Wedding. Following Game of Thrones, Madden has had supporting roles in successful films like Rocket Man and 1917. He took a leading role in Marvel’s Eternals and earned praise as the lead in the British series Bodyguard. Madden co-stars in the 2023 series Citadel.

11.Gwendoline Christie – Brienne of Tarth

Brienne of Tarth in Regular Armor

Brienne of Tarth may be the only Game of Thrones character who kept her moral integrity throughout the entire series. Her dedication and loyalty, first to Renly Baratheon and later to Catelyn and Sansa Stark, became her defining characteristics. Brienne’s only lapse in judgment was thinking Jaime would choose anyone over Cersei. Brienne became the first female knight in Westeros and commanded an army in the Battle of Winterfell. Game of Thrones ended with Brienne named commander of the Kingsguard. Gwendoline Christie jumped to the Star Wars universe as Captain Phasma in two movies. She plays a main role in Netflix’s Wednesday and is set to join Severance season 2.

10.Sean Bean – Eddard Stark

Ned Stark holding his sword in Game of Thrones

Eddard “Ned” Stark’s decisions laid the groundwork for every major event in Game of Thrones. First, he chose to keep Jon Snow’s identity a secret. Then, he agreed to serve as Robert Baratheon’s Hand of the King. When he discovered Cersei’s children were Jaime’s, he was betrayed by Littlefinger and imprisoned. Ned’s execution became one of the most shocking TV deaths of all time. Following Game of Thrones, Sean Bean’s most successful film was The Martian. He has also appeared in the series Snowpiercer. Bean’s credits include several British films and TV series, as well as voice actor roles. He starred in the 2023 box-office bomb Knights of the Zodiac.

9.Nikolaj Coster-Waldau – Jaime Lannister

Jaime Lannister wearing armor in Game of Thrones.

Jaime Lannister went from villain to hero and back again during his time on Game of Thrones. From pushing Bran out of a window to defending the realm against the Night King, Jaime bounced between horrific and heroic deeds. But his devotion to Cersei defined him. Jaime died holding his sister as King’s Landing collapsed around them. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau earned more roles in American films following Game of Thrones. He has also done projects in his native Denmark and VOD films with limited theatrical releases. He co-starred with Jamie Foxx in 2023’s God Is a Bullet. Coster-Waldau’s miniseries The Last Thing He Told Me also released on AppleTV+ in 2023.

8.Jack Gleeson – Joffrey Baratheon

Joffrey Baratheon's profile in Game of Thrones

Joffrey Baratheon had no redeeming qualities as one of Game of Thrones’ most evil characters. Robert’s death gave Joffrey the Iron Throne, but it was clear he wasn’t in charge. His cruelty was always on display, often directed at Sansa and Tyrion. Joffrey married Margaery Tyrell in season 4 but was poisoned at his wedding feast. Jack Gleeson stepped away from acting following Game of Thrones. He later returned in several theater productions in Ireland. In 2023, he co-starred with Liam Neeson in the film In the Land of Sinners and Saints. Gleeson also has a role in the upcoming BBC series The Famous Five.

7.Iwan Rheon – Ramsay Bolton

Ramsay Bolton looking angry in Game of Thrones

Ramsay Bolton was the only Game of Thrones character more sadistic than Joffrey. He tortured Theon Greyjoy and brainwashed him into becoming Reek. After helping his father betray the Starks, Ramsay cemented his status as a villain by abusing Sansa. Jon Snow got his revenge in the Battle of the Bastards when he recaptured Winterfell, defeated Ramsay, and let Sansa feed Ramsay to his dogs. Following Game of Thrones, Iwan Rheon had a main role in Marvel’s Inhumans series. He’s been more active on British TV in recent years. Next, he stars in the Peacock series Those About to Die, which is about Roman gladiators.

6.Natalie Dormer – Margaery Tyrell

Margaery Tyrell sitting in the garden in Game Of Thrones

Margaery Tyrell proved herself to be cunning and capable of playing the game in order to become queen. She first believed that would come through her marriage to Renly Baratheon. But only when she replaced Sansa as Joffrey’s betrothed did Margaery become queen of Westeros. She married Tommen after Joffrey’s death, but she could never overcome her rivalry with Cersei. She was arrested because of Cersei, and she later died in Cersei’s attack on the Sept of Baelor. Natalie Dormer’s film career post-GoT includes horror films like The Forrest and Patient Zero. She led the Starz series Penny Dreadful: City of Angels before it was canceled after one season.

5.Peter Dinklage – Tyrion Lannister

Tyrion Lannister drinking wine in Game of Thrones

The history books of Westeros may not mention Tyrion Lannister, but he had a hand in nearly everything that happened on Game of Thrones. He evolved from a hedonistic passenger to serving as Hand for three different rulers. Tyrion was instrumental in helping Daenerys build her army and take the Iron Throne, perhaps ignoring the signs of her fate. Game of Thrones ended with Tyrion named as Hand to King Bran. Peter Dinklage has seen more success in films than his co-stars. After lending his voice to Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, he’ll star in the Toxic Avenger reboot and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.

4.Jason Momoa – Khal Drogo

Khal Drogo spreading his arms in Game of Thrones.

Khal Drogo appeared to be a one-dimensional character in the Game of Thrones pilot. However, his relationship with Daenerys grew and he became very protective of his Khaleesi. The Dothraki warlord even planned to sail across the sea to conquer Westeros for her. However, blood magic couldn’t save him following a mortal injury, and Drogo died before his plan went into action. Jason Momoa has made a career out of blockbusters thanks to AquamanFast X, and Dune. Momoa also created the upcoming AppleTV+ series Chief of War, in which he also stars.

3.Isaac Hempstead Wright – Bran Stark

Game of Thrones‘ ending declared that no one had a better story than Brandon Stark. First paralyzed by Jamie Lannister, he became a warg, traveled north of the wall, and became the Three-Eyed Raven. Tyrion’s speech about Bran convinced the other leaders to declare him king. Following Game of Thrones, Hempstead Wright returned to school to study neuroscience. His only role since leaving the HBO series was as a supporting character in the 2021 science-fiction film Voyagers.

1.Where Are The Other Notable Game Of Thrones Cast Members

Game of Thrones season 8 cast by the Iron Throne
  • Bella Ramsey – Lyanna Mormont: Lyanna Mormont was a scene-stealer in Game of Thrones . She proved to be just as fierce on the battlefield as she was berating her fellow Northerners. Lyanna died at the Battle of Winterfell but went out a warrior. Bella Ramsey returned to the spotlight in 2023 as Ellie in The Last of Us .
  • Rose Leslie – Ygritte: Ygritte delivered the iconic Game of Thrones line “ you know nothing, Jon Snow ” as the wildling tormented and fell in love with Jon. Despite their connection, the two were on opposite sides of the war between Westeros and the Wildlings. Ygritte died in Jon’s arms during an attack on Castle Black. Rose Leslie, who married Kit Harington, had success on TV after Games of Thrones . She appeared in season 4 of Luther and starred in The Time Traveler’s Wife .
  • Nathalie Emmanuel – Missandei: Missandei became Daenerys’ trusted adviser and translator, helping the Mother of Dragons navigate Essos. Her love story with Grey Worm became one of Game of Thrones best relationships . Missandei died when Cersei ordered her executed by The Mountain. In 2023, Nathalie Emmanuel returned to the Fast & Furious franchise in Fast X . She’ll soon star in Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis opposite Adam Driver.
  • Alfie Allen – Theon Greyjoy : Theon Greyjoy began as the cocky ward of Ned Stark. Ambition got the best of Theon, and his efforts to take Winterfell by betraying the Starks ultimately backfired. He’s captured and tortured by Ramsey Bolton. However, Theon found a level of redemption by helping Sansa escape and bravely dying in the Battle of Winterfell. Alfie Allen stayed active in British TV following Game of Thrones , appearing in series such as White House Farm and SAS: Rogue Heroes .
  • Thomas Brodie-Sangster – Jojen Reed: Jojen Reed appeared in season 3 to help Bran travel north of the wall and find the Three-Eyed Raven. Like Bran, Jojen was a greenseer who had visions of the past and future. He was mercifully killed by his sister Meera after a wight attack, but not before helping Bran reach his destination. Thomas Brodie-Sangster had another breakout role as chess champion Benny Watts in The Queen’s Gambit . He stars in the upcoming Disney+ series The Artful Dodger as the famous Charles Dickens character.
  • Aidan Gillen – Petyr Baelish: ” Chaos is a ladder ,” said Petyr Baelish, and the man known as Littlefinger was an expert at causing and navigating chaos. He aligned himself with the Starks, Lannisters, and Starks again in an effort to stay close to the seat of power. In the end, his schemes caught up to him, and Arya executed him for his crimes. Aidan Gillen went on to supporting roles in The Maze Runner: The Death Cure and Bohemian Rhapsody . He’s also turned in memorable performances in Peaky Blinders and Mayor of Kingstown .
  • Kristofer Hivju – Tormund Giantsbane: Tormund was a formidable Freefolk fighter who also became one of the funniest characters in the Game of Thrones cast . His friendship with Jon Snow helped unite both sides of the Wall and defeat the White Walkers. Kristofer Hivju went on to land roles in the comedies Downhill and Cocaine Bear, as well as the Netflix series The Witcher . He’ll play a supporting role in the upcoming Dwayne Johnson/Chris Evans Christmas adventure movie Red One playing Krampus.
  • Carice van Houten – Melisandre: Melisandre, aka the Red Woman, could never really be trusted. She first believed Stannis would sit on the Iron Throne to serve the Lord of Light. As events unfolded, she found herself at the Wall for Jon Snow’s assassination. Her redemption began by resurrecting Jon, and she later helped at the Battle of Winterfell. Carice van Houten continued to act in films around the world, including The Affair , Domino , and Lost Girls & Love Hotels . However, nothing has reached the mainstream appeal of Game of Thrones .
  • Michelle Fairley – Catelyn Stark: Catelyn Stark fiercely defended her family after her husband Ned’s execution. She acted as an advisor to Robb during the War of the Five Kings, only for it to cost Cat her life at the Red Wedding. Michelle Fairley picked up main roles in series such as The Feed , Gangs of London and Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story in recent years.
  • Gemma Whelan – Yara Greyjoy: Yara Greyjoy was one of the toughest characters in Game of Thrones . She captained her own ship out of the Iron Islands and seemed to only have a soft spot for her brother Theon. Yara aligned with Daenerys and eventually took back her home. After Game of Thrones , Gemma Whelan had a supporting role in Anya Taylor-Joy’s Emma . Her voice can be heard in video games such as Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker and Elden Ring . She currently leads the British police procedural The Tower .
  • Rory McCann – Sandor Clegane: Nicknamed “ The Hound ,” Sandor Clegane had a prickly personality to say the least. But he showed a softer side in how he protected Sansa and Arya Stark. He also traveled north of the Wall to fight the Army of the Dead. The Hound returned to King’s Landing to confront his brother, The Mountain, leading to both their deaths. In 2019, Rory McCann played the villain Jurgen in Jumanji: The Next Level . On TV, he voices Megatron in the animated series Transformers: EarthSpark .
  • Jerome Flynn – Bronn: Bronn made the best of his opportunities in Game of Thrones . The sellsword championed for Tyrion during his trial in the Eyrie and became his bodyguard. For not assassinating Tyrion and Jaime on Cersei’s orders, Bronn was given Highgarden after Daenerys’ victory. The knight was then named Master of Coin on King Bran’s council. Jerome Flynn played Berrada in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum , running the mint. He can also be seen as the antagonist Banner in 1923 .
  • Hannah Murray – Gilly: Gilly was a sympathetic character living in a terrible situation under her father, Craster. Samwell Tarly rescued her, and the two stayed together throughout Game of Thrones . Gilly revealed she was pregnant in the series finale. Hannah Murray hasn’t completed many projects since the show ended. Her only credit is a four-episode run on the horror series The Expecting, which streamed on Quibi.
  • Liam Cunningham – Davos Seaworth: Davos Seaworth, the Onion Knight, was another Game of Thrones character whose allegiance was forced to change. Initially loyal to Stannis Baratheon, Davos later became Jon Snow’s advisor. Davos survived the Battle of Winterfell and was named Master of Ships by King Bran. Liam Cunningham has appeared in smaller films like The Vault and The Last Voyage of the Demeter . He’ll reunite with Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss for the Netflix sci-fi series 3 Body Problem, where he’ll play Thomas Wade.
  • Charles Dance – Tywin Lannister: Tywin Lannister instilled fear differently than other Game of Thrones villains. He effectively ran Westeros as Hand of the King for three rulers. However, he had an abrupt death when Tyrion murdered him. Charles Dance brought the necessary gravitas to the role. After the show, he played a main role in The Crown seasons 3 and 4. He played supporting roles in blockbusters like Ghostbusters , Godzilla: King of the Monsters , and The King’s Man . Dance’s next role is alongside Jeff Goldblum in The Liar, based on Stephen Fry’s novel.
  • John Bradley – Samwell Tarly: Samwell Tarly proved you don’t need to be a fearless fighter to survive Game of Thrones . He clearly wasn’t cut out for the Night’s Watch and found his calling as a maester. Sam was Jon Snow’s best friend, protecting him, Gilly, and Little Sam whenever necessary. John Bradley popped up in the Jennifer Lopez rom-com Marry Me and the sci-fi epic Moonfall . On TV, he leads the Australian crime thriller North Shore . Next, he’ll play John Rooney for David Benioff and D. B. Weiss in 3 Body Problem .
  • Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson – Gregor Clegane: The Mountain Who Rides was the cruelest Game of Thrones character . After suffering severe injuries and poisoning during his combat with Oberyn, Gregor underwent Qyburn’s experiments to survive. He died at King’s Landing in a fight with his brother, The Hound. Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson hasn’t done much acting since Game of Thrones ended; he has been more active as a boxer and bodybuilder. He co-starred with Mike Tyson in the action movie Pharoah’s War. He had a small role in The Northman as well.
  • Mark Addy – Robert Baratheon: The Game of Thrones pilot introduced King Robert Baratheon, looking far from the fierce fighter who took the Iron Throne from House Targaryen. His loveless marriage to Cersei and illegitimate children in King’s Landing helped set the series in motion. He died during a hunting accident under suspicious conditions. Mark Addy landed dozens of British TV roles after Game of Thrones . His credits include Atlantis , Doctor Who , and White House Farm . He also had supporting parts in the films Downton Abbey and Mary Poppins Returns . Addy reprised his role as David “Dave” Horsfall from the 1997 film The Full Monty for the Disney+ sequel series.
  • Daniel Portman – Podrick Payne: Pod showed how long the road to knighthood can be in Westeros. He began as a squire for Tyrion and eventually served Brienne of Tarth. Pod survived the Battle of Winterfell and was rewarded with a spot in King Bran’s Kingsguard. Daniel Portman played a 14th-century Scottish chief in the historical war film Robert the Bruce in 2019. Then, in 2023, he played the pub owner in the Black Mirror episode “Loch Henry.”
  • Iain Glen – Jorah Mormont: Ser Jorah Mormont’s life in exile made him one of the most well-traveled Game of Thrones characters. He lived with the Dothraki before pledging himself to Daenerys. He survived greyscale and the mission to retrieve a wight from beyond the wall. Jorah died protecting Daenerys at the Battle of Winterfell. Iain Glen went from Game of Thrones to Titans , playing a polarizing version of Bruce Wayne . He currently has a recurring role in the critically acclaimed AppleTV+ series Silo .
  • Conleth Hill – Lord Varys: Varys claimed he did everything for the realm . That meant using his network of “ little birds ” to spy on allies and adversaries alike. He was always loyal to Daenerys and her claim to the Iron Throne. Things changed when he began questioning her sanity. Varys paid for it when the Mother of Dragons had him burned alive. Conleth Hill has stayed busy in British television series and movies. He has a main role in the BBC series Vienna Blood .

It’s hard to imagine anyone from the Game of Thrones cast landing another role that could match the cultural impact of the HBO series. But the popularity and influence of the show were due in large part to the ensemble cast and how each performer brought something special to their character. Regardless of what they do in the future, the Game of Thrones cast is forever part of television history.
