Fran Drescher to Adapt Iconic ’90s Sitcom The Nanny for Broadway

The girl from Flushing is headed to the stage.
Fran Drescher is bringing her beloved ’90s sitcom, The Nanny, to Broadway.
Drescher will be writing the show’s book alongside her ex-husband and co-creator of the sitcom, Peter Marc Jacobson, while Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s Rachel Bloom is set to compose the music and lyrics for the stage adaptation.
Fran Drescher announced yesterday that her adored ’90s sitcom, The Nanny—which ran from 1993 to 1999—will be adapted into a musical coming soon to Broadway.

The heavily referenced sitcom followed the life of character Fran Fine, a born-and-bred queen from Queens who ends up becoming a nanny for a wealthy and widowed Broadway producer in Manhattan. It’s six seasons’ worth of a hilariously long and winded road to love, complete with dozens of star-studded celebrity cameos and superb ’90s designer fashion.

Drescher shared the big news on her Instagram with a throwback photo of her and the late Elizabeth Taylor, who famously guest-starred during the sitcom’s third season.
“The Nanny Musical Broadway Bound!” exclaimed Drescher. “Go online it’s all over the news!” The actress followed the news with another post of an ultra-nostalgic throwback image of the show’s main cast.

And all over the news it was. According to The New York Times, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend creator and actress Rachel Bloom is reported to be composing the show’s music and lyrics, while Drescher and her ex-husband and co-creator of The Nanny, Peter Marc Jacobson, are set to write the show’s book.

Film adaptions are no stranger to Broadway, but a television series being taken to the stage is a far rarer occurrence. The Nanny would be only the third television show to be adapted for Broadway, following SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical and The Addams Family.
