Jack has been a fan-favorite since the show first debuted in 2018. Viewers last saw him at the Firefighter’s Ball in the Season 6 finale, which quickly turned into a disaster when the dance floor caved in and took several team members down with it. Jack nearly fell in too, but he was pulled to safety just in time. Despite hitting his head during the chaos, he appeared to be fine and was even attending to the other victims. In the Season 7 premiere, Jack was rushed to Grey Sloan Memorial, where Dr. Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) performed surgery on him and saved his life. After the procedure, she informed newly promoted captain Andy Herrera (Jaina Lee Ortiz) that Jack will not be cleared to work as a firefighter ever again.
New showrunners Zoanne Clack and Peter Paige explained the reasoning behind Jack’s heartbreaking fate, with Paige telling TVLine: “It was really important to me that we explore what it is to let go of a dream, and there is something about Jack Gibson, about his openness and vulnerability, that makes him a really compelling vehicle to explore [that with].”
The executives had previously hinted at this outcome ahead of the premiere. “I personally have felt that an underexplored part of firefighting, as it’s represented in media, is the expiration date on a firefighter’s career. When we talk about, say, dancers, we always talk about how it’s a short career,” Paige told the outlet. “But for firefighters, it can be a similarly devastating dream to hold. It can be taken away from you quite quickly for a myriad of reasons, one of which is death, one of which is injury. To hold this dream with all the risks that it entails and to have it taken from you is a powerful part of this story that is often overlooked.”
Even Grey Damon might have suspected that this head injury would be the end of Jack’s career. While speaking to TV Fanatic just after the Season 6 finale, Damon addressed the odds of Jack’s career being compromised. “If it’s going to happen to anyone. It’s probably going to happen to Jack,” he said, jokingly adding: “Maybe Jack will go blind because of his injury. Who knows?” He continued. “He’s this really great firefighter, but he keeps falling down and getting hit by things. He’s not very coordinated.”
