Chicago Fire’s New Firefighter Revives A Forgotten Severide & Kidd Problem

Chicago Fire season 11’s newest firefighter effectively resurrects an unresolved relationship problem between Kelly Severide and Stella Kidd.

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Chicago Fire season 11.

The newest firefighter on Chicago Fire season 11 effectively brings back an unresolved issue between Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo). Firehouse 51 has maintained its core members for years now, but it also has its fair share of newbies — the latest one, Sam Carver (Jake Lockett) seems to be bad news. Aside from possibly wreaking havoc in Truck 81, his arrival could also cause marital issues between newlyweds, Severide and Kidd.

Following several setbacks in their personal and professional lives, the show’s main romantic pairing finally tied the knot in the Chicago Fire season 10 finale. This was a cause for celebration for Firehouse 51, even prompting Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) to return to the Windy City after relocating to Portland, Oregon. Following an almost tragic honeymoon, Severide and Kidd returned to work in the Chicago Fire season 11 premiere where Chief Boden (Eammon Jacobs) introduced the Truck lieutenant to her new member — Carver.

Despite having a working history, Kidd doesn’t like Carver because of his misogynistic and racist tendencies — something that he confirmed through his brief but biting comments, but only when his lieutenant is around. Carver questioning his superior’s credentials is similar to Kidd’s previous experience of being accused of sleeping her way up the organization’s ladder because she was dating Severide, who was already a lieutenant then. When Severide found out about this, instead of fully backing up his then-girlfriend, he didn’t do anything about it in the Dick Wolf-produced show. Granted that he was bothered about it, but there was no conscious effort on his part to address the issue. When Kidd brings up her budding problem with Carver with her now-husband, Severide is once again lukewarm about the issue.

Severide & Kidd’s Marriage Is Off To A Rocky Start

Kidd and Severide Wedding in Chicago Fire season 10 finale

As great as it was seeing Severide and Kidd finally tying the knot, their marriage, unfortunately, is off to a rocky start. Even before Carver was introduced, the newlyweds were already met with a near-death experience after someone attempted to murder both of them during their honeymoon. This prompted Severide to expose a dirty cop, who apparently, was serving as an asset to the police which burned some bridges for him at the force. It doesn’t seem like this particular problem has already been fully resolved in the Chicago Fire season 11 premiere, so expect it to continue factoring in the couple, particularly Severide’s arc as a newly-married man throughout the year. Meanwhile, Kidd will have her hands full managing Truck 81 with Carver obviously having a vendetta against her.

Given their respective arcs in Chicago Fire, don’t expect that Kidd and Severide will make another significant progress with their relationship like having kids. In any case, it doesn’t seem like they are in a rush to build a family at this point. Tying the knot was already a big step for them, it’s safe to say that it will take a while before they decide to have a baby — unless NBC throws a curveball at them and subject them to an accidental pregnancy.

Chicago Fire season 11 airs Wednesdays on NBC.
