Chicago Fire’s Kara Killmer Shares First Photos From Filming Her Last Scenes as Sylvie Brett

Chicago Fire won’t be the same without Sylvie Brett. As we wait for the premiere of Brett’s final season, you might be wondering: When exactly is Sylvie Brett leaving Chicago Fire? Learn about the latest Season 12 update below.

Chicago Fire is Dick Wolf’s long-running firefighter series that focuses on the lives of firefighters, rescue personnel and paramedics of the Chicago Fire Department’s fictional Firehouse 51. The procedural was renewed by NBC and was slated to return this fall, but the writers’ strike and actors’ strikes made it impossible for filming to begin in July to keep on pace for a September premiere. NBC pushed Season 12 to 2024 and aired re-runs of Fire this fall instead.

Variety reported in November 2022 that Kara Killmer, who plays paramedic Sylvie Brett, will be exiting the show after Season 12. Killmer joined the Chicago Fire cast as the ambulance paramedic in 2014 in Season 3 to replace the late Leslie Shay. Her character is most known for her relationship with Captain Matthew Casey (played by Jesse Spencer), who was a series regular on the firefighter drama until Spencer left the show in Season 10. Although the two characters broke up following Spencer’s exit, Spencer made recurring appearances throughout Season 11, and the finale ended with Casey proposing to Brett — although fans didn’t get to see her answer.

Shortly after the news of her exit broke, Killmer shared a series of photos from her first few days on set. “These are the very first few pictures I took, or was tagged in, when I first came to Chicago. Going up in the Squad 1 basket was my first exposure to the CFD—some of the best firefighters in the country! The view from my very first apartment was absolutely stunning and the beginning of a love affair with the gorgeous city of Chicago!” she wrote on Instagram.

When is Sylvie Brett leaving Chicago Fire?

When is Sylvie Brett leaving Chicago Fire? We’re not completely sure. She’s slated to appear in the first part of Season 12, although it is not confirmed yet how many episodes she’ll be featured in, according to Variety.

On Nov. 22, the actress shared a behind-the-scenes photo of filming prep week for Chicago Fire Season 12. “Filming prep week! Makeup @chicagomakeupartists! Fittings with Sue! Special effects with the whole crew! My very last Ambo driving training today…😢😛 Everything is coming together to bring you an awesome season 12! @nbconechicago @wolfentertainment #bts #chicagofire,” she penned on Instagram.

“I can’t wait for season 12 but I’m so sad for you to leave the show. You’re one of my absolute favorites!” one fan replied in the comments. “I sure hope they write it that you say yes to Casey and ride off into the sunset together. Gonna miss you on the show!” another person responded.

NBC recently announced that Chicago Fire Season 12 will premiere on January 17 at 9 p.m. EST. The upcoming season will reportedly have only 13 episodes in Season 12, according to reports from Deadline and TV Line, marking the shortest season in the show’s history.

Although Brett will be leaving the show, a familiar face will be gracing our screens again: Taylor Kinney! The actor will be returning as Kelly Severide after taking a hiatus in January 2023 “to deal with a personal matter.” While Kinney was absent, fans were treated to multiple special guest appearances from Severide’s former costar, Captain Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer), after he left the series in Season 10. Spencer will likely make an appearance at the start of Season 12 as we wait to learn whether Sylvie accepts his marriage proposal.
