Chicago Fire : why worry about Chicago Fire season 12 being shorter than the standard one ?

In a recent report from Deadline regarding cost-cutting efforts being made across the Wolf Entertainment One Chicago shows including Chicago Fire, Deadline reported that the number of episodes most of the show’s series regulars on the One Chicago shows have been “asked to do next season has been reduced by a couple, going from standard 22 to 18-20.”

The comment was made in reference to changes to the number of episodes members of the cast are expected to appear in next season. Still, it’s created a lot of confusion among the fans who have been left to wonder whether the show’s episode count is being reduced next season.

So is there any reason to be concerned about season 12 of Chicago Fire being shorter than the standard season?

How many episodes will be in Chicago Fire season 12?

Upon renewal of the One Chicago shows, it was reported that Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago PD will all be coming back for 22-episode seasons. This is the standard episode count for broadcast shows and is on pace with recent season of the One Chicago franchise, and therefore is not a shortened season by any measure.

What is expected to change next season is that series regulars on the show might not appear in every episode — a practice we’ve seen many broadcast shows adopt in recent years including CBS’s SWAT. This means that there might be a few episodes when a particular character is not present, but does not mean the season’s episode count is being shortened.
