Million-dollar blockbuster expected to replace ‘Star Wars’
TPO – Action movie “Rebel Moon” creates an overwhelming feeling with its vast fantasy world. However, the work lost points because the script was familiar and the story was unfinished.
With an investment cost of more than 166 million USD, Rebel Moon is one of the most expensive blockbusters ever made but is not shown in theaters, only released on online platforms. The project explores the theme of space science and interplanetary war, with many details inspired by the classic Star Wars film series.
Famous stars from all continents such as Sofia Boutella, Doona Bae, Charlie Hunnam, Anthony Hopkins… are also factors that help the first part A Child of Fire quickly gain attention when shown on Netflix.
The work currently tops the rankings of the most popular TV shows in many countries, including Vietnam.
Beautiful effects and action
The film’s story is set in a fictional setting on a peaceful planet far from Earth. Even though they are not too rich, local people can still live comfortably with abundant food, dancing and singing every day.
Everything suddenly changed when Motherworld’s army arrived and threatened everyone’s lives. This is a dictatorial empire that has sought to dominate the galaxy for centuries, seeking to spread war everywhere.
At this time, Kora (Sofia Boutella) – a female soldier who escaped from Motherworld – decided to gather the most talented warriors in the universe to fight to regain peace.
Sitting in the director’s chair is none other than Zack Snyder – a filmmaker famous for superhero projects such as Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Justice League (2017)… According to être -kip, this is a passionate project that the filmmaker has cherished since 1997 but encountered many difficulties so it could not be implemented.
Basically, Rebel Moon’s story is not too new. The script co-written by Zack Snyder is heavily inspired by the works of “Japanese cinema king” Akira Kurosawa, the Star Wars series and Heavy Metal magazine.
With a familiar plot, the filmmaker invested a lot in building the fantasy universe. Viewers have the opportunity to travel through distant lands beyond Earth, from vast deserts to remote, dark planets.
The character system is as diverse as Star Wars with winged creatures, spider hybrid warriors or talking robots – reminiscent of the classic C-3PO robot image.
Zack Snyder gives his brainchild many highly aesthetic scenes. Computer effects play an important role in creating many impressive and beautiful scenes, such as the scene where the main character stands looking at the vast universe at the beginning of the film, or the epic battle scene at the end.
With many years of experience, the director also succeeded in leading the action segment. The fighting and fighting segments are handled well, helping to increase the appeal of the film.
Limit
In addition to Zack Snyder’s name, the star cast is also a factor that helps Rebel Moon gain attention. Taking on the main role of Kora, Sofia Boutella leaves a lot of sympathy with her angular face. The Algerian star also performed well in the action scenes, proving that the director did not choose the wrong person
The remaining actors are at a good level. Ed Skrein makes a strong impression as the scheming, cruel villain. Doona Bae, Ray Fisher and Charlie Hunnam all play the roles of warriors alongside Kora. On the contrary, Dutch actor Michiel Huisman is somewhat lackluster when playing the main character’s lover.
With a star cast and big budget, Rebel Moon has a scale no less than a blockbuster theatrical release. Choosing to release on an online platform is a reasonable direction for the team. Because before that, the blockbuster Dune: Part Two made many audiences disappointed because it was delayed and had to be postponed to next year.
Unfortunately, Zack Snyder’s passionate work was severely criticized by critics when it was released with 25% of votes, rated “Rotten” on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score is also not very positive with 5.7/10 points on IMDb.
Despite the visuals and many eye-catching action scenes, Rebel Moon has not convinced viewers because the script has many limitations.
Most of the reviews are low because the film is deeply personal to the director. In most scenes, Zack Snyder overuses slow-motion effects, causing viewers to gradually lose sympathy.
The story still lacks a twist and climax, so it doesn’t leave many highlights. The relationship between the characters is superficial and not deepened. In addition, some details have not been completely resolved and are only suggestive to serve as a springboard for the second part called The Scargiver, scheduled to be released on April 19 next year.
Ignoring the limitations, Rebel Moon is still very entertaining, a choice not to be missed for those who love the action and science fiction genres. In addition to the official version, the project will be released an extended version, which according to the director will be “a completely different movie”.
