The acclaimed Yellowstone spinoff series, 1923, could be closer to getting cameras rolling after a long production delay due to last year’s WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. A new report offers a major progress update on Season 2 of the Taylor Sheridan-created series.

Per Statesman, a new document from the City of Austin has revealed that 1923 Season 2 will begin production in July in Austin, Texas. Principal photography for the Western drama series is expected to run through the summer, concluding in September, with all production operations happening in Austin.
Furthermore, the document revealed additional production details for 1923 Season 2. The listed budget for the upcoming season is $150 million, with the document also breaking down the cost for Greater Austin taxpayers. The document didn’t indicate a potential release window despite the new production information. With principal photography due to run into September, it likely means Season 2 won’t hit screens until deep into 2025 given the extensive post-production process.

1923 Season 2 Was Delayed Due to the Strikes
Work on 1923 Season 2 was suspended indefinitely last June at the height of the Hollywood labor stoppages. No subsequent updates on the series came until January, when star Brandon Sklenar revealed he was preparing for “cowboy camp,” hinting that production on the series would start soon. The series switched to Austin for production after primarily filming Season 1 in Montana, with additional shoots taking place in Malta, Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa.
Acting as a prequel to and spinoff of Yellowstone, 1923 chronicles a generation of the Dutton family in the titular year while going through the hardships of prohibition and the early stages of The Great Depression. The series stars acting legends Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as Jacob and Cara Dutton, with Sklenar portraying Spencer Dutton, while Julia Schlaepfer and Jerome Flynn also feature. Season 1 proved a strong critical success, with the series earning a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score and garnering Golden Globe nods, including a Best Actress nomination for Mirren.

Season 2 will commence without the late Cole Brings Plenty, who played sheepherder Pete Plenty Clouds in Season 1. Plenty was found dead on Apr. 5, days after being suspected of domestic violence and being reported missing. 1923 is one of multiple Yellowstone spinoffs either in development or being shot, including 1944 and 2024, which is due to feature Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey, receiving one-season orders.
