[Warning: The following post contains MAJOR spoilers for Will Trent Season 3 Episode 12, “You’re the Worst Person in the World.”]
Will Trent (Ramon Rodriguez) is struggling deeply after a tragic officer-involved shooting that claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy. His mental health and relationships are being severely affected, and this week’s episode dives into the aftermath. The GBI team joins forces with the Atlanta PD to investigate a cult-related murder. Despite being assigned desk duty, Will goes undercover to gather information, and during his investigation, he reflects on a sentiment that resonates with him — that he doesn’t want to hear he’s still a good person, but instead, he wants to be told, “You’re the worst person in the world.”
His way of coping leads to a tense rupture in his relationship with Marion Alba (Gina Rodriguez), especially since they had just begun to get more serious. Marion had previously said the shooting was a “clean shot” after Will was cleared of wrongdoing, but he rejected that phrasing, pushing Marion away. She ends up confronting him, telling him she loves him, but his lackluster response makes her decide to end things. We’re left wondering if Will’s efforts to heal through his undercover mission will lead to reconciliation.
So what’s next for Will and Marion? Does she understand the reasons behind their breakup? TV Insider caught up with Gina Rodriguez to get deeper insight into Marion’s perspective.
After Will has been avoiding her, Marion finally decides to end things. What’s the breaking point for her?
Gina Rodriguez: Marion and Will have very different approaches to their relationship. While Marion’s last breakup was amicable and she wants similar healthy communication here, Will processes his emotions in his own way. Their grief responses clash, and although Marion makes efforts to reach out and communicate, when Will rejects her, she realizes it’s time to step back. She respects herself enough to not force something that isn’t working. The final straw for her was when she told him she loved him, and his response was not what she had hoped for.
How does it affect Marion when she opens up about her feelings, and Will doesn’t reciprocate?
It’s a painful moment for Marion. By allowing herself to be vulnerable, she was hoping for a deeper connection, but when Will shuts her down, it becomes clear to her that she needs to protect herself. She knows she deserves more than a relationship that doesn’t give back the same respect and emotional investment she’s offering.
Does Marion realize that her comment about the “clean shot” affected Will so deeply?
No, she doesn’t fully understand how much her words hurt him. She wasn’t aware that her attempt to make peace would cause such a rift. Her biggest disappointment comes from the fact that she wanted to support him, but he refused to let her in. That lack of trust is what drives her to make the difficult decision to walk away.
Do you think Marion notices that Will is turning to Angie for comfort during his emotional struggles?
Marion is focused more on Will’s behavior toward her. At this point, her main concern is how he’s handling their relationship, not necessarily the fact that he’s leaning on Angie. Marion is confident in herself, and she’s more concerned with Will’s lack of openness and respect toward their bond.
In a scene with Faith, Marion has a brief confrontation over a confidential informant. Does she know it’s Jeremy, and if not, how would that change her view of Will?
Marion isn’t aware that it’s Jeremy. If she were to find out, it would definitely impact how she sees Will. She would feel conflicted about the breach of trust, both in their personal and professional relationship. She would be deeply disappointed to learn that Will kept this from her.
Does Marion understand the full extent of Will’s past trauma before they met, or is this something she’s still figuring out?
Marion was aware that Will had a difficult past and accepted that he wasn’t ready to share everything. Over time, she’s learned more about him, but his inability to process his trauma and engage in their relationship became clear only after the shooting incident. His refusal to work through his issues, particularly with her, is something Marion can’t continue to ignore. It becomes a dealbreaker for her.
When Marion tells Will that he knows where to find her, do you think that means she’s still open to reconciliation?
I think Marion’s words show that she’s not closing the door completely. She left it open for him, but only if he’s ready to approach her with the same emotional investment and maturity she needs. After their heartbreaking conversation, she’s not willing to wait indefinitely, but she wouldn’t rule out a future connection if he steps up when the time is right.
What can we expect from Marion as the season moves forward?
You’ll have to wait and see! But I will say that Marion’s sense of self-worth will continue to be a central theme. She is someone who values respect, love, and clear communication, and she won’t settle for anything less.
Is there more you’d like to explore about Marion’s backstory or her mindset in the future?
What I love about Marion is that her actions speak volumes about who she is. She’s a strong, self-assured woman who knows what she deserves and won’t accept less. Her journey is about standing firm in her beliefs and looking for a partner who values her in the same way.
