What’s Jamie Dornan’s Secret to Making a Plain Black Suit Look This Good?

It was a regular old Irish love-in at the Fashion Awards in London last night. Firstly with designer Jonathan Anderson, who swept the categories. And with Jamie Dornan, who honoured his fellow Northern Irish designer (and IRL friend) on-stage by wearing his designs off-stage.

The actor, a global ambassador for Loewe and the new face of the luxury fashion house’s fragrances, rocked up to the red carpet in a classic black Loewe suit paired with a white collared shirt and polished shoes to match. And while it’s true wearing a classic black suit to a fashion industry event might be seen as ducking the dress code, The Tourist star proved that a really great black suit will always bang. And for that, you need some add-ons.

The accessories in question? A skinny satin-y tie — a relic from the indie sleaze era that’s flying back round – and some duckbill-shaped Campo derby shoes, which are fun, but can easily blend in as something classic.

“Everyone’s favourite Irishman” was how Dornan introduced Anderson on stage when he presented the Designer of the Year award. When he slightly fumbled the grand envelope opening — earning him some coos and a few chuckles from the crowd — he finally threw in the towel: “I’ll just tell you who it is… it’s Jonathan Anderson!”

“It’s nice to see Irish people are back en vogue,” said Anderson in his acceptance speech. It was his second consecutive win (and third overall) of the night’s biggest gong. “This job is not always the easiest, but I love fashion, it’s something that gets me out of bed every morning,” he said, upon accepting the trophy from Dornan. “To everyone who is wanting to be a fashion designer, the great thing about fashion is that we all go out of fashion. So there are loads of jobs to be taken downstairs, so come and get them.”

And the best way to get started? Wear a Jamie Dornan-approved black suit.
