The final episode of Grey’s Anatomy’s season 21 promises to be a dramatic and shocking finale—literally. In the trailer released by ABC ahead of the “How Do I Live” episode airing on Thursday night (10/9c), viewers get to witness a tense situation: Jenna – the mother of Dylan (played by guest actress Piper Perabo) – unexpectedly turns the operating room into a prison. In a fit of desperation, Jenna holds the entire team of doctors and nurses hostage. Standing in front of an oxygen tank, a lighter in her hand, her eyes filled with determination, she declares firmly: “No one leaves here… until you save my daughter.”
After all, this tense twist shouldn’t have come as a surprise to those who have watched the recent season. Grey’s Anatomy – the hit medical series that has been renewed for a 22nd season – has kept viewers on edge for several episodes, ever since Dylan underwent surgery to treat a cavernous angioma, a serious condition that could threaten her life. At first, the surgery seemed successful as Dylan woke up in a relatively stable condition. However, things quickly took a turn for the worse. Her health deteriorated rapidly: from being able to communicate by blinking her eyes, Dylan completely lost all expression – unable to communicate at all.
Dr. Amelia, who performed the surgery – and who was also amazed that she was able to do what her late brother, the legendary Dr. Derek Shepherd, had failed to do – still tried to hold out hope. She told herself that in medicine, sometimes patients get worse before they get better. But this time, the situation was so dire that optimism was impossible.
In the trailer, Amelia and many other characters – including Simone, Lucas, nurse BokHee and other medical staff – are all controlled by Jenna. The tense atmosphere, putting everyone in a real life-or-death situation, makes viewers unable to help but worry about the fate of the doctors and the young patient.
