Wait… Am I Actually Team Owen Now? Why Grey’s Anatomy Just Changed Everything in Season 21, Episode 14

Owen Hunt’s behavior in most of his relationships has been questionable to say the least throughout Grey’s Anatomy , but he didn’t do anything wrong this time, despite Teddy feeling justified in her anger in season 21, episode 14. Owen and Teddy’s relationship problems were constant in Grey’s Anatomy season 21 after season 19 had already touched upon Owen feeling forgotten in their marriage, as he and Teddy only met to talk about their kids’ schedule or work after she became chief of surgery. Their dynamic changed in Grey’s Anatomy season 20 only because Teddy almost died in season 19’s finale.

However, once Teddy regained her position and the commitments associated with it, her and Owen’s disconnection presented itself again, warranting a round of couples therapy that seemingly left them dissatisfied in Grey’s Anatomy season 21. Teddy and Owen’s bond was a fixture of the medical drama since her arrival in season 6 established their close friendship and Teddy’s evident feelings for him. This made their story particularly compelling, especially once they finally got together and Owen proved he could also not be spiteful toward his partner. Still, while Owen transgressed plenty in the past, that wasn’t the case with Nora.

Why Owen Is Such A Controversial Character In Grey’s Anatomy

Owen Hunt Behaved Terribly With The Majority Of His Romantic Partners

Owen Hunt possibly had one of the most amusing introductions in the medical drama, bringing Cristina in after she was stabbed by an icicle, but his relationship record has been less than stellar. From breaking up with his fiancée with a two-line email after joining the US Army before even appearing in Grey’s Anatomy to generally disregarding his partners’ wishes, Owen made a name for being selfish and at times manipulative in his romantic relationships. Sometimes, Owen’s personal life also bled into his professional one, with his problems and beliefs affecting his treatment of patients and behavior with colleagues.

Teddy and Owen’s many marital issues on Grey’s Anatomy should be cause for a divorce, but the likelihood of that actually happening is slim.

However, Owen’s worst actions in Grey’s Anatomy always involved his romantic partners, specifically cheating. Indeed, Owen famously cheated on Cristina in Grey’s Anatomy season 8 after badgering her for weeks and even erupting at Zola’s birthday party, accusing Cristina of “killing their baby” because she got an abortion, despite knowing from the first moment how Cristina never wanted children. Owen later admitted to subconsciously wanting to punish Cristina because he hated her, following her abortion.

Curiously, Grey’s Anatomy season 14 addressed his self-consciousness about being a cheater, with Owen rebutting that, only for Amelia to hilariously answer “Ah, tomato, tomahto, potato, adulterer.

Owen’s cheating pattern however emerged when he cheated on Emma Marling in Grey’s Anatomy season 10 the moment their relationship started becoming serious, choosing to sleep with Cristina the night she arrived drunk to his trailer. Owen also cheated on Amelia in Grey’s Anatomy season 14, kissing Teddy because he felt ignored by Amelia as he dealt with his sister’s return and surgery and Amelia was nowhere to be seen around his family. Curiously, Grey’s Anatomy season 14 addressed his self-consciousness about being a cheater, with Owen rebutting that, only for Amelia to hilariously answer “Ah, tomato, tomahto, potato, adulterer.

Owen Didn’t Do Anything Wrong In Grey’s Anatomy Season 21, Episode 13 Despite Sleeping With Nora

Owen & Teddy Had Agreed To Open Their Marriage After Teddy Suggested It

Grey’s Anatomy comprehensively established Owen’s cheating pattern, but sleeping with Nora didn’t count as such, because Owen and Teddy decided to open their relationship at Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 12’s end. Not only was that an outcome Owen and Teddy had planned and set out specific boundaries for, but it was an idea Teddy suggested after she admitted being attracted to Cass and Owen did the same with Nora. Owen even opposed multiple times the idea, including after learning about Cass and her husband’s agreement, only saying yes to try and save his and Teddy’s marriage.

Owen’s established pattern of cheating to punish his partners can be seen throughout Grey’s Anatomy, but what he did with Nora could never be counted as such, as he was just exploring what Teddy had suggested in a bid to save their challenging marriage.

Teddy being angry at Owen for going through with sleeping with somebody else when she couldn’t because she felt like betraying their marriage has everything to do with her and nothing with Owen. Indeed, Owen slept with Nora respecting the confines of his and Teddy’s agreement, not even wanting to tell Teddy about it because that was part of their rules. Teddy’s reaction to shut Owen out presented itself again when she learned about it, highlighting a problem emphasized throughout Grey’s Anatomy season 21, as she often cut him out when she couldn’t deal with a problem he brought up.

What Owen’s Night With Nora Means For His Marriage To Teddy

It’s Unclear How Owen & Teddy’s Relationship Can Survive This Crisis

Owen and Teddy’s relationship has had problems since they got married, as quickly after that he put their family in danger by illegally supplying life-ending drugs to terminally ill veterans, forcing them to go on the run and spend thousands on reinstating his medical license. The impasse they found themselves in Grey’s Anatomy season 21 is one of the many, which means they could potentially overcome this too and get back to being inseparable.

At the same time, with their marriage being riddled with problems in and out since it began – and even before, as Teddy notoriously cheated on Owen with Tom Koracick just before she and Owen were supposed to get married – Owen’s night with Nora could be what makes Teddy and Owen realize their breakup is inevitable. This outcome could nevertheless be avoided if Grey’s Anatomy season 21 finally tackles the decades gone by Teddy spent loving Owen unilaterally, as their taxing relationship evidently impacted her. Maybe, this could save Owen and Teddy’s relationship for good in Grey’s Anatomy.
