As Blue Bloods prepares to air its final episodes later this year, series star Tom Selleck already has his sights set on his next chapter—and it involves revisiting one of his most iconic roles.
In a recent interview with TV Insider, Selleck opened up about the end of Blue Bloods and his creative ambitions moving forward. Among them? A potential return to the world of Jesse Stone, the hard-edged police chief he first brought to life in the 2005 made-for-TV movie Jesse Stone: Stone Cold.
“I might have to write [a script for another movie],” Selleck admitted, suggesting he’s ready to take matters into his own hands to bring the character back. “It wouldn’t be a final one because everybody loves it. Jesse is a great character, and it would be fascinating to find out where he is quite a few years later.”
While Selleck acknowledged he’s taking time to regroup as Blue Bloods wraps, he made one thing clear: retirement isn’t in the cards just yet. “I don’t know what’s next, but assuming the phone doesn’t stop ringing… I’m going to keep working.”
A Role That Predates Blue Bloods
Before he was NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan, Selleck made waves as Jesse Stone, the troubled but sharp-witted police chief at the center of a long-running film series based on Robert B. Parker’s bestselling detective novels. The first book, Night Passage, introduced Jesse in 1997, and the character made the leap to television in 2005.
From 2005 to 2012, Selleck starred in eight Jesse Stone films on CBS. In 2015, the ninth film, Jesse Stone: Lost in Paradise, premiered on Hallmark Channel. Not only did Selleck portray the title role, but he also co-wrote several of the movies, including No Remorse, Innocents Lost, Benefit of the Doubt, and Lost in Paradise. His performance in Sea Change (2007) even earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie.
Saying Goodbye to Blue Bloods
After over a decade on the air, Blue Bloods was renewed for a fourteenth and final season in July 2023. The first half of Season 14 premiered earlier this year, and the final eight episodes are set to debut on October 18, 2024. The series finale will air in December, bringing the Reagan family’s long-running story to a close.
But for fans of Tom Selleck, it may not be a farewell—just a shift in focus. If the actor has his way, Jesse Stone could be making a long-awaited return. And judging by the fan love for the character, that’s a comeback worth waiting for.
