This Overlooked 2024 Netflix Comedy Is the Unexpected Sequel to Dakota Johnson’s 94% RT Hit — And It Totally Works

The Netflix film Wicked Little Letters serves as a reminder of the film The Lost Daughter. The cast of The Lost Daughter and Wicked Little Letters share similarities, mainly that Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley play the leads in both films. While the films offer their unique perspectives on different topics, they are worth seeing as a double feature.

The Lost Daughter was released back in 2021, and, besides Colman and Buckley, it also starred Dakota Johnson and Paul Mescal. Wicked Little Letters is not a sequel by any means, but it still serves as a great pay-off to get to watch Colman and Buckley together again. This time, the actors actually get to bounce off each other in Wicked Little Letters.

Wicked Little Letters Reunites Olivia Colman & Jessie Buckley After Netflix’s The Lost Daughter Movie

The Two Actors Play Off One Another Wonderfully

Wicked Little Letters is now streaming. The film reunites Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley after they shared the character of Leda in Netflix’s 2021 film, The Lost Daughter. The two actors were never in the same scene, as Colman played the older version of Leda and Buckley played the younger version.

The real events of Wicked Little Letters were referred to as the Littlehampton Letters.

Wicked Little Letters is based on the true story of Edith (Olivia Colman) and Rose (Jessie Buckley). As the title may suggest, Edith receives wicked letters, and she suspects they are from her former friend Rose, simply because Rose enjoys swearing in public. Hilarity ensues with the two characters trying to one-up each other throughout the film. This time, Colman and Buckley share many scenes together.

Wicked Little Letters Is A Big Genre Switch-Up After The Lost Daughters

While the two actors are in both films, in tone and genre, the movies differ a lot. The Lost Daughter is a very sad psychological drama about Leda coming to terms with a secret in her past surrounding her daughters. At a holiday resort, she meets Nina, played by Dakota Johnson. Nina is struggling with a daughter of her own. The film takes quite an intense turn after that, as it switches between narratives of Leda in the now and Leda when she was younger.

Wicked Little Letters, on the other hand, is a dark comedy mystery film, so tonally entirely different. Still, the contrasting films showcase Colman and Buckley’s talents in entirely different ways. Finally, having the two actors shine together in the same scenes feels rewarding after seeing them separate throughout the entire The Lost Daughter film.

Both Wicked Little Letters and The Lost Daughter are worth seeing. Whether it is a specific tone someone is after or not, in both films, Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley perform at their best. After waiting for a long while to see the actors appear together, Wicked Little Letters proves worth the wait.
