Well, Murphy made good on his word. Deadline has confirmed that ABC will be moving forward with a new 9-1-1 spinoff in Nashville. Fittingly titled 9-1-1: Nashville, the spinoff will be produced and written by Tim Minear and the aforementioned Murphy. It will also be executive produced by Angela Bassett, who stars in and produces the flagship 9-1-1 show.
Nashville was selected as the new 9-1-1 location after a lengthy process. The outlet reports that the producers originally considered setting the spinoff in Las Vegas. They then moved over to Hawaii, but the cost of filming in the Aloha State proved to be too high. Plus, NCIS had recently pulled the plug on their own Hawaii spinoff.
Nashville is different enough from Los Angeles and Texas, plus Deadline alludes to a tax credit being offered to ABC for shooting there. Wins across the board. The notion of a third 9-1-1 show is thrilling, given how many characters there are in the franchise, and how many opportunities there are for huge crossovers.
9-1-1: Lone Star may have recently ended, but star Rob Lowe admitted that he would be willing to return to the franchise if the circumstances were right. “Listen, I never say never to anything. It’s a character that means a lot to me,” he explained to People. “I have such respect and admiration for first responders. It’s an honor whenever I can bring their stories to the screen, so you never know.”
