Oscar-winning actress Olympia Dukakis has died at the age of 89 at her home in New York.
She is best known for her prominent roles in films such as: “Mr. Holland’s Opus”, “Steel Magnolias”, “Moonstruck”.
The death was confirmed by her brother, Apollo Dukasis, through a post shared on Facebook.
“My dear sister, Olympia Dukasis, died this morning. She passed away after a few months after having health problems.”
Olypmia gained a lot of attention at the age of 56 for her role in Moonstruck, a role that won her a Golden Globe and an Oscar.
The artist began her acting career on stage and made her Broadway debut in “The Aspern Paper” in 1962. Her first television performance came the same year in episodes of “The Nurses” and “Dr. Kildare”, but her acting remained largely in the spotlight until the late 1980s and early 1990s.
She was also known for her philanthropy and political activism, while teaching for more than 15 years in New York. She founded the Whole Theater Company in Montclair, New Jersey, along with her husband.
Dukakis, the daughter of Greek immigrants, was born in June 1931 in Massachusetts and attended Boston University.
