Sandra Oh, Former ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star, Reveals Returning to the Show Is No Longer a “Never”

Fans of Shonda Rhimes’ medical drama Grey’s Anatomy remember the sadness they felt seeing Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) dance it out for the last time on their television screens. Since that season 10 scene, Sandra has gone on to star in several other shows, including Killing Eve and The Sympathizer.

Now, though, it seems like the Emmy winner may be feeling some nostalgia about her iconic role. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly on the show’s 20 year anniversary, Sandra revealed that it’s no longer a “hard no” for her in terms of potentially returning to Grey Sloan Memorial.

“As for actually physically inhabiting the character of Cristina and coming back…. for the longest time, it has always been a hard no. And it’s just…. I don’t know. I just don’t know,” Sandra said.

“I don’t feel the need to revisit, but I also profoundly understand the audience’s love for this character, because I’ve seen it for the past 10 years. That’s the part that makes me just go, hmmm.”
Fans have certainly been hoping for an appearance from Dr. Cristina Young for a while. Even when producers noted that Meredith and Christina’s friendship was still alive and well via text messages in season 17, fans were thrilled.

“Ok at least we got a Cristina text appearance I’m happy,” a fan said at the time. “I love that #GreysAnatomy brings Cristina back through text BEST PART OF THE SHOW!” another commented.

Sandra also shared that she loves the fact that her former character is able to live on through the texts.

“I am glad for the show to use the character as they see fit. Absolutely,” she shared with the news outlet. “The character should still be there to service the story— and so, yay!”

Well, here’s hoping we get to see Cristina back on our screens after all!
