Before Pat Morita became a household name as Mr. Miyagi in The Karate Kid, he was just another struggling actor trying to make ends meet. In the early ’70s, Morita faced financial difficulties while trying to secure a home for his growing family. He was short $3,500, until legendary comedian Redd Foxx stepped in to help.
A 2000 interview with the Television Academy revealed how Foxx’s generosity gave Morita the push he needed, and effectively reshaped his life. Rather than demanding repayment, Foxx insisted Morita pay it forward if he ever made it big. This moment of kindness became a pivotal chapter in Morita’s journey toward success in Hollywood.
Redd Foxx’s support gave Pat Morita a new start
Morita met Sanford and Son star Foxx while working as a stand-up comedian and later appearing as Ah Chew on Foxx’s show. The pair formed a bond that extended beyond the set. When Morita found a foreclosed home but lacked the funds for a down payment, he turned to Foxx in desperation.
Foxx did not hesitate, and after joking about not carrying “small change,” he wrote Morita a $3,500 check on the spot. Foxx made it clear there was no debt to be repaid except for a promise to help others when the time came.
