Grey’s Anatomy Season 21’s Deadly Cliffhanger Clears The Path For Arizona’s Return

The events of Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 8’s cliffhanger ending make way for Arizona’s return in the most straightforward way possible. After leaving in Grey’s Anatomy season 14’s finale, Arizona returned to Grey Sloan Memorial for a patient in season 20, episode 4. Arizona’s different perspective made it possible for Bailey to realize her mistakes in how she handled the new interns’ punishment, being the key through which Bailey rediscovered the magic of groundbreaking surgery and found a new path to motivate the interns. Arizona’s expertise nonetheless makes her return likelier to happen because of one patient in particular.

Jo’s unexpected pregnancy has been a key storyline since Grey’s Anatomy season 20’s finale. Jo’s fainting prompted Levi to test her and tell her she was expecting a baby, leading her to spend the first half of Grey’s Anatomy season 21 wrapping her head around the news, only to learn she and Link were actually expecting twins, making it even more difficult. However, Jo realizing she was bleeding during the convenience store robbery teased a tragic future for her when Grey’s Anatomy season 21 returns, upending her life for the worse unless a fetal surgeon saves her and the pregnancy.

Saving Jo & Her Pregnancy Would Be A Good Reason For Arizona To Return

Grey’s Anatomy’s later seasons saw several characters who had been part of the show years before return for multi-episode story arcs or even just for one-time appearances. This was the case for Sydney Heron returning in Grey’s Anatomy season 21 for three episodes and Addison popping by in Grey’s Anatomy seasons 18 and 19, but also Arizona’s, whose appearance in Grey’s Anatomy season 20, episode 4 made complete sense after she became a world-renowned fetal surgeon under Dr. Herman. Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 9’s promo highlighted Jo’s dire situation, making a good fetal surgeon necessary to save her pregnancy.

Jo’s path had been littered with burdensome challenges, and coming to terms with her pregnancy was already difficult, making a potential miscarriage the final straw after Jo’s long list of tragedies.

Arizona returning would give Jo and her pregnancy the best chance of not turning into yet another miscarriage story, of which Grey’s Anatomy tackled many through the years. Jo’s path had been littered with burdensome challenges, and coming to terms with her pregnancy was already difficult, making a potential miscarriage the final straw after Jo’s long list of tragedies throughout the medical drama. Jo’s impending health crisis makes Arizona one of the former Grey’s Anatomy characters needing to return in season 21, even just not to subject Jo to yet another painful hardship.

Why Grey’s Anatomy Should NOT Do Another Miscarriage Storyline

It Has Done Plenty & The Purpose Of Some Only Seemed To Add Drama

Grey’s Anatomy had many doctors go through miscarriages through the years, lending to a variety of storylines as they all reacted differently. From Cristina’s ectopic pregnancy that she didn’t want but still put her through surgery to Meredith’s heartbreaking miscarriage in the middle of operating on Owen as Cristina operated on Derek in season 6’s finale, Grey’s Anatomy had its protagonists go through distressing miscarriages often made even more harrowing by the circumstances in which they happened.

Even when they happened in less extreme situations, like Arizona’s and Bailey’s miscarriages, they still put them through unimaginable pain, making the occurrence sometimes feel like a plot device to make their circumstances more dramaticGrey’s Anatomy put Jo through extremely painful situations and season 21 already showed her go through a dark time, making her potential miscarriage entirely avoidable given the many times Grey’s Anatomy already tackled the topic.
