Super chef Gordon Ramsay affirmed that Laos and Vietnam are the world’s top culinary destinations in a recent interview.
During a visit to South Korea, the 56-year-old chef stopped by his new pizza restaurant in Seoul, Gordon Ramsay Street Pizza, where he spoke to Korean YouTuber Cho Seung-yeon about the dark side of food, his obsession with celebrity chefs, and what good food means to him.
In a video, Cho asked Ramsay, “What do you think is the number one culinary destination?”. Considering the question for a second, Ramsay quickly answered Laos, Vietnam , and Madrid.
Ramsay replied: “I recently visited Laos, went back to the remote provinces and spent time in the countryside, away from the crowds. The food is impeccable. Vietnam, in particular, has so much delicious food. I love Vietnam, in a humble way, for great food.”
The Scottish master chef came to Vietnam to film the second season of Gordon’s Great Escape series in 2013. Gordon had difficulty learning the duck recipe from a female chef in Hanoi, selling noodles at the Can Tho floating market with his aunt Hai, or making rice rolls.
So impressed with Vietnamese food, Gordon even included Hu Tieu in the competition in the fourth season of Master Chef and told the contestants: “This is one of the best dishes I’ve ever eaten, so don’t let me down.”
On his most recent return to Laos, Gordon sought inspiration for the Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted series. In the land of a million elephants, he challenged himself by kayaking through the most dangerous sections of the Mekong River for the first time, diving for snails, catching giant water bugs… Gordon reunited with Lao chef Joy Ngeuamboupha to learn how to fish at Khone Falls, one of the widest waterfalls in the world with more than 9,000 cubic meters of water pouring down every secon
