A new Yellowstone spinoff about Kayce is in the works, the new series marking a franchise first in the expansion of Taylor Sheridan’s TV universe. There are multiple upcoming Yellowstone spinoffs in the works, all of which take place at various points on the Dutton family timeline. This includes one focused on Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), alongside another prequel about the titular ranch’s history, titled 1944. Other spinoffs in the works include The Madison, which is set to debut on Paramount Network in 2025, and 6666, centered around the Four Sixes Ranch.
According to Puck (via Deadline), a new Yellowstone spinoff starring Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton is in the works for CBS. The untitled series will be the first spinoff to be developed for a broadcast TV network. Not only does this announcement follow the end of the main show in December 2024, but also successful re-airings of multiple seasons during the 2023 Hollywood strikes. As of writing, it’s unclear what Kayce’s spinoff is poised to focus on.
What Kayce’s New Spinoff Means For The Yellowstone Franchise
The Show Expands The Series In All New Ways
While it hasn’t been confirmed if Kayce’s spinoff will take place after the end of Yellowstone, it makes the most sense for the series’ story trajectory. The series finale saw the last living Dutton son sell his family’s ranch to Chief Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), while still getting to keep the land in the East Camp he lives on with his family. Following his life after these events makes the most sense, especially since the upcoming Beth and Rip spinoff will be doing the same for his sister.
Kayce’s ending in Yellowstone was perfect, but neo-Western screenwriter Taylor Sheridan could easily undo it to continue the flagship series.
Our Take On Yellowstone’s New CBS Spinoff In Development
How Will Kayce’s Story Continue?
The expansion of Yellowstone as a franchise onto network TV proves how much of a titan the series remains, even after it’s ended. While there’s no telling how Kayce’s story will continue, it would make sense for it to focus on him raising his family now that the ranch isn’t in his hands anymore. How it can keep going beyond the relatively happy ending he received, however, remains unclear, though still marks a historic moment for the franchise’s continuation.
