According to the official logline, Materialists follows “a young, ambitious New York City matchmaker” who “finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex.” The trailer shows Lucy (Johnson), a matchmaker who promises her clients that they will “marry the love of your life.” After celebrating the ninth client marriage of her career, Lucy bumps into the man of her dreams (Pascal) and her ex-boyfriend (Evans) on the same night. As one suitor attempts to wine and dine “eternal bachelorette” Lucy, she can’t help but feel drawn back to her past.

Song quickly became one of the next big names to know in Hollywood with her 2023 feature film debut, Past Lives, which she directed and wrote. The film, starring Greta Lee and Teo Yoo, follows two childhood best friends who reunite in adulthood years after one emigrates from South Korea to the United States.

Song previously reflected on fans’ passionate response to the movie in a 2023 interview for Harper’s Bazaar. “I’ve heard everything from ‘This movie made me want to go home and hug my partner and tell them I love them’ to ‘This movie made me realize that I’m in a bad relationship and that I should leave,’ ” she said. “Suddenly, this specific story about this specific person going through this specific thing opens up because of how empathetic people are; it opens up something under their own skin. Through Past Lives, I was trying to describe as accurately as I could what it’s like, for me, to be a person. Then the audience showed up and said, ‘This really reflected the way that I’m a person. I feel like a person the way you feel like a person.’ Sometimes, that just makes you feel less lonely.”
