The Office writers made sure to give their characters depth and believable stories. With nine seasons spread across eight years, viewers got to know their favorite members of Dunder Mifflin. The mockumentary setting meant that the characters were followed in both their work and personal lives.
By the end of the series, a lot had changed from when the show first started. Dunder Mifflin itself had been run by different people, and various employees came and went. The regular cast kept viewers tuning into the show, and each of their well-written endings left fans happy to know what the future held for them.
Jim Had the Chance to Do What He Loved
Actor | First Episode | Last Episode |
John Krasinski | “Pilot” | “Finale” |
From the beginning, Jim became one of the main focuses of The Office. He was a deadpan contrast to Michael and Dwight’s relentlessly outlandish behavior around the workplace, able to have a level-headed approach to his job and others. It was made abundantly clear from the outset that he was in love with Pam, though their relationship took some time to come together.
Jim grew up a lot through the seasons, particularly when he and Pam got married and had children. Though their relationship hit a rocky patch in later seasons, partly because of Jim splitting his time between Dunder Mifflin and working at Athlead, they were able to work it out. By the end of the series, Pam put Jim first and decided that they could move to Austin for him to pursue a full-time career at what was now called Athlead. Jim came a long way from being a reserved, uninspired salesman to a husband, father and motivated sports-marketing worker.
Pam Found Her Happiness
Actor | First Episode | Last Episode |
Jenna Fischer | “Pilot” | “Finale” |
Pam was a beloved character on the show, bringing joy and sometimes tear-jerking emotion to each episode. Of course, her ending wasn’t too dissimilar to Jim’s, but she also had her own story. Pam went on a journey to find out what truly made her happy and to go after what she truly wanted in life.
She finally married the man she was meant to be with and became a mother. Although, as previously mentioned, it wasn’t all plain sailing for her and Jim, by the end of the series, they were a content family. It was usually Jim who would come up with surprises, but this time, Pam put their house up for sale so that Jim could follow his dreams. Up until then, she had been a receptionist, saleswoman and office administrator in Scranton.
Michael Had the Family He’d Always Wanted
Actor | First Episode | Last Episode |
Steve Carell | “Pilot” | “Goodbye, Michael” |
Michael Scott was simultaneously the best and worst manager. He could be the greatest friend in the world, but he was also too focused on trying to get people to like him, which didn’t make him fun to be around. The character left in Season 7 but on a beautiful note. He had found the love of his life in Holly, and he was moving to be with her.
Thankfully, Michael was brought back for the finale and audiences got to learn about what he’d been up to. He appeared to be the happiest he’d ever been, having settled down with Holly and had children. It was uplifting to see that Michael had found his way with Holly because his previous relationships never worked out well. Finally, Michael was calm and in a great place.
Andy Realized What He Had
Actor | First Episode | Last Episode |
Ed Helms | “Gay Witch Hunt” | “Finale” |
Andy was a character that audiences couldn’t help but feel sorry for. He had little support from his parents, who openly approved of his brother far more than him. Like Michael, he could never seem to find his way with relationships. Andy tried to embark on a journey to become a famous performer, but it didn’t turn out well after he went viral for crying at an audition.
Something that Andy always enjoyed talking about was his attendance at Cornell University and being part of the Acappella group Here Comes Treble. Although his quest for fame didn’t work out quite how he wanted, Andy found a job at Cornell. His final quote on the show, “I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good old days before you’ve actually left them,” highlighted that maybe he realized that he didn’t have to keep seeking out fame and fortune because there’s happiness to be found in front of him.
Darryl Worked Hard for the Career He Wanted
Actor | First Episode | Last Episode |
Craig Robinson | “The Alliance” | “Finale” |
Darryl became a bigger character as the show went on. He began working in the warehouse before getting an office upstairs. He was quite a reserved person, but he didn’t stand for any nonsense. When Jim began to work for Athlead, he encouraged Darryl to apply for a job, which he got.
By the end, Darryl had made his way up the ladder and nabbed the job of V.P. of Athlete Relations. It’s also revealed that he managed to patch things up with his ex, Justine. Justine and their daughter moved with Darryl to Austin, where he was able to carry on with the job he loved.
Dwight’s Career and Family Were Finally in Place
Actor | First Episode | Last Episode |
Rainn Wilson | “Pilot” | “Finale” |
Dwight’s character arc on The Office took him through some bizarre situations (often of his own making) before his story was rounded off with everything that he ever wanted. Dwight was hard-working and took his job seriously, sometimes a little too seriously. He also went through a lot of ups and downs with Angela, as their on-off relationship took time to find its way.
Thankfully for Dwight, by the end of the series, they get married. Even better, before their marriage, Angela told Dwight that her son, Phillip, was, in fact, his. Dwight had suspected that Angela’s baby was also his son, but Angela had always denied it up until that point. If the perfect family life for him wasn’t enough, Dwight had also been promoted to Regional Manager at Scranton.
Kelly Went Back to Ryan
Actor | First Episode | Last Episode |
Mindy Kaling | “Diversity Day” | “Finale” |
Kelly left The Office at the beginning of Season 9 but returned for the finale, in which audiences learned more about where Kelly was in her life. She was still engaged to a doctor named Ravi and was seemingly happy with him at Dwight and Angela’s wedding.
However, when Ryan saw her at the event, they quickly hit it off again, like they had done throughout the course of the show, albeit in a very toxic way. Ryan was at the wedding with his baby, which he and Kelly got Ravi to examine as Ryan said he didn’t seem well. When Ravi took the baby, Kelly and Ryan took it as their opportunity to run off together.
Angela’s Frosty Personality Melted Away
Actor | First Episode | Last Episode |
Angela Kinsey | “Pilot” | “Finale” |
Angela was always portrayed as a stern stickler for the rules. She had little concern for anyone else and could be an unpleasant present around the office. The only time she seemed truly happy was with Dwight, and, to her delight, that’s how Angela’s story on the show ended.
There were no more games or uncertainties surrounding their relationship. The two got married, and Angela was beaming the whole time. Although it wasn’t specifically stated, it seemed as if Angela was always straight-faced because she hadn’t found her joy. As it turned out, Dwight and her son were everything she needed.
Kevin Made Amends With Dwight
Actor | First Episode | Last Episode |
Brian Baumgartner | “Pilot” | “Finale” |
Kevin was one of the funniest characters on The Office. He was a loveable member of the team who would make mistakes and wasn’t that great at his job, but he was fairly harmless. Dwight had fired Kevin from his job as an accountant, which left him with bitter feelings.
As part of his best-man duties, Jim took it upon himself to get Dwight to Kevin, so the two could be on good terms again. By doing so, viewers found out that Kevin had become the owner of a bar. Dwight had the chance to explain to him why he got fired, and the two were able to be friends again by the end of the series.
Oscar Was Pushing for a New Career
Actor | First Episode | Last Episode |
Oscar Nunez | “Pilot” | “Finale” |
Oscar was another character who saw things as they were. He didn’t get caught up in Michael or Dwight’s antics and was often able to give sound advice to anyone who needed it. Audiences felt that Oscar had more to give than remaining in a job that didn’t completely satisfy him.
At the end of The Office, Oscar said he was running for state senator. The ambition was very fitting for his character, and it was nice to know that he was trying to reach for a job that would make him happier. In a great turn of events, considering Angela and Oscar didn’t always see eye-to-eye, Oscar became Godfather to Angela and Dwight’s son, Phillip.
