Donnie Wahlberg Officially Teases ‘Boston Blue’—The Next Chapter of Blue Bloods
March 25, 2025 — While Blue Bloods may have wrapped its remarkable 14-season run, it’s far from the end of the road for Detective Danny Reagan. Donnie Wahlberg is officially returning to the beat—this time in Boston.
On Tuesday, Wahlberg took to Instagram to share a teaser for Boston Blue, the upcoming spinoff set to premiere this fall on CBS. “So excited to carry on the tradition, to share so many surprises, to answer some unanswered questions and to welcome all of you — to Boston Blue!” Wahlberg wrote, confirming the highly anticipated continuation of the Blue Bloods universe.
In a follow-up post, Wahlberg added: “The next chapter in the Blue Bloods legacy begins. I can’t wait. See you CBS fall!”
A New City, A New Partnership
Boston Blue follows Danny Reagan as he transitions from the NYPD to a new post in Massachusetts, where he’ll be partnered with Detective Lena Peters—described as the oldest daughter in a storied Boston law enforcement family. While the role of Lena has yet to be cast, the setup promises a dynamic mix of legacy, fresh perspective, and classic police drama.
According to CBS, the series will explore Danny’s personal and professional challenges as he adjusts to a new city, new cases, and a new partner—all while carrying the emotional weight of his past in New York.
What About the Original Cast?
Though no other Blue Bloods cast members have been confirmed for Boston Blue, fans are hopeful for cameos and crossover moments. The Blue Bloods series finale, which aired on December 13, 2024, hinted at future developments in Danny’s personal life, particularly his evolving relationship with longtime partner Maria Baez (played by Marisa Ramirez), after he asked her out on a date. That unresolved storyline has fans speculating she could appear in the new show in some capacity.
Fan Reactions: Hope, Nostalgia, and Excitement
Following Wahlberg’s announcement, fans flooded social media with an outpouring of excitement, nostalgia, and curiosity.
“YAY!!!!!! This makes me so happy!!! We were just saying how much we miss Blue Bloods!!!!” one fan wrote.
“Can’t wait. I do hope some of the old cast makes some appearances,” added another.
One user echoed a common sentiment: “I wish it was the entire family—that’s what made Blue Bloods work, not just one character.”
Others were simply relieved to see Danny Reagan return in any capacity. “Wasn’t ready to say cheerio to Danny! Boston will be a cracking backdrop too,” one commenter wrote. Another declared: “This is gonna be legendary! So excited for this next chapter!”
Behind the Scenes: The Spinoff’s Unexpected Origins
Interestingly, Boston Blue wasn’t initially pitched as a Blue Bloods spinoff. According to Deadline, the series was originally developed as a standalone police drama centered around a family of Boston cops. But once producers realized the thematic and narrative overlap, they saw an opportunity to expand the Blue Bloods universe. That’s when they reached out to Wahlberg to bring Danny Reagan into the fold.
The series will be showrun by Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, known for their work on The Blacklist and L.A.’s Finest. Wahlberg will serve as an executive producer alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed, lending major weight to the production team.
A Legacy Continues
Blue Bloods first premiered on CBS in 2010 and ran for 293 episodes over 14 seasons, earning a devoted fanbase for its portrayal of family, faith, and law enforcement. While the series has ended, Boston Blue offers longtime fans a new path forward—one filled with action, heart, and the familiar face of a Reagan ready to serve.
CBS has not yet announced a premiere date, but Boston Blue is officially slated to debut in fall 2025.
