Dog with Enormous Tumor Found Abandoned in Trash-Filled Dumpster in Michigan

A dog with a serious medical condition was found in a Michigan dumpster.

On Tuesday, March 25, police found a male pit bull mix without a collar in a dumpster in Ann Arbor, Mich., according to the City of Ann Arbor Police Department. The dog was not microchipped.

Per police, the pup has a large abscess or tumor on the left side of his ribs.

The dog was safely removed by the police with assistance from the Washtenaw County Animal Control. He is now being treated at the Humane Society of Huron Valley.

It is unclear how the dog got inside the dumpster.

The canine is estimated to be about 10 years old, the Humane Society of Huron Valley wrote in a Facebook post.

The organization described the pup as “nervous but very sweet.”

The dog is white with a black marking on one side of his face. Photos of the incident show him lying inside the dumpster, surrounded by several trash bags. During the rescue, the dog was lifted out of the trash bin using a blue mat that had multiple straps for carrying.

An update shared by police on Wednesday, March 26, said the dog is still undergoing treatment.

A statement provided by the humane society read, “We will keep you updated on the diagnosis for the mass on his side. Yesterday afternoon we let this guy decompress and got him out for his first walk in the evening, he didn’t seem to want to go far but enjoyed sniffing around and taking treats.”

Addressing the concerned community members, the organization added, “Please know that, regardless of how he ended up in the dumpster, the majority of our community is filled with compassionate people like all of you — that always gives us hope, and we hope it does for you as well!”

Police said the dog was discovered by a person, who called 911. The call “saved his life,” police said.

The humane society is accepting donations for the dog’s medical expenses. Meanwhile, Ann Arbor police encourage anybody with information about the dog or its owner to contact the department at (734) 794-6920.
