In an interview with Vanity Fair, Dakota Johnson revealed that behind the scenes of the production of Fifty Shades of Grey, there was a lot of controversy. However, after all, she still has no regrets about participating in this “hot” series
Dakota Johnson became an international star after being cast as the female lead Anastasia Steele in the three Fifty Shades films . In a conversation with Vanity Fair published on June 28, the 33-year-old beauty shared that the process of completing the series became complicated and made everyone crazy, partly because of the author of the original story – female writer EL James. She said: “I signed on to do a very different version of the movie that we did. EL James has a lot of creative control over the work at all times. She often asks for certain things to happen. There are parts of the book that are not suitable for film, like the extremely cheesy internal monologue. It would not work when they were read aloud. It was always a tense battle. Always.”
The 1989-born actress said that making the Fifty Shades trilogy was “something crazy”. The beauty continued: “There were a lot of disagreements during production. I can’t really talk about it because I want to promote the work properly and I’m proud of what we did in the end and everything turned out the way we wanted, which is difficult”. She revealed how the production team overcame disagreements with the original author: “We did the scenes that James wanted and then we did the scenes that we wanted. The night before, I would rewrite scenes with old dialogue to add a few lines here and there. It was always a mess”.
Despite the heated backstage battles, Dakota Johnson said she has no regrets about joining the project and holds no ill will toward EL James. The 8X beauty added that the work helped her career and that she felt lucky to be involved in Fifty Shades of Grey, even though things were a little strange and confusing at times.
“If I had known at the time that it was going to turn out like this, I don’t think anyone would have taken the job. It was really confusing. But I don’t regret doing it… There are things I can’t say because I don’t want to hurt anyone’s career or reputation, but Jamie Dornan and I were treated very well. James is a nice lady, she’s always been nice to me, and I appreciate that she wanted me in those movies,” Dakota said.
Fifty Shades is a romantic erotic film based on the book series of the same name by female writer EL James. The film consists of three parts: Fifty Shades of Grey (2015), Fifty Shades Darker (2017) and Fifty Shades Freed (2018), revolving around the love story between innocent young girl Anastasia Steele (played by Dakota Johnson) and sadistic billionaire Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan). The two accidentally met, were attracted to each other, then plunged into a lustful relationship and gradually found love and understanding for each other. Despite receiving many criticisms about the content and bold scenes, the three parts of Fifty Shades still grossed a total of 1.32 billion USD at the global box office.
