Chris McKenna Shares His Excitement About Stepping Into the Role of Jack Brennan on General Hospital

The General Hospital world is buzzing with excitement as Chris McKenna takes over the role of Jack Brennan, following the departure of Charles Mesure. While fans may still be mourning Mesure’s exit, McKenna is ready to make the role his own — and he’s eager to dive into the drama of Port Charles!

A Familiar Face to Soap Fans

McKenna, a familiar face to soap opera lovers, has been a fixture in daytime TV since the early ‘90s. He first appeared as Joey Buchanan on One Life to Live from 1990 to 1993. Fast forward to 2014-15, and McKenna was seen playing Mark Harding on The Young and the Restless. His long-time relationship with General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini came full circle when he was called in for the role of Jack Brennan, marking a new chapter in his soap career.

“Frank still thinks of me as that 14-year-old kid, so it was fun to remind him that I’m all grown up now,” McKenna laughs, referring to their shared history from One Life to Live.

Reconnecting with Old Friends

Though he and Laura Wright, who plays Carly Corinthos, had not seen each other in over 30 years, their chemistry was undeniable. The two met in 1994 at a Make-A-Wish softball game, where their roles were far from anything glamorous — but this time, it was all business. “We hugged, caught up quickly, and she wished me luck,” McKenna recalls. Their read-through went so well that Valentini couldn’t resist teasing McKenna. “Frank said, ‘You were not this good when you were 12.’ And I said, ‘No s**t!’”

Their first scene together was part of an audition process for McKenna, who didn’t initially know he was reading for the part of Jack. Instead, the producers gave him a scene inspired by Brennan, with no character name attached. “It was great fun getting that first read with Laura after all these years,” he says, appreciating the support she offered.

Stepping Into Jack Brennan’s Shoes

Now that McKenna is officially the new Jack Brennan, he’s excited to get to know his character better. “I’m still learning who Jack is, but it’s a thrill to play such a meaty role,” he shares. The transition into the character has been smooth, with McKenna describing Jack as a “new version” of the kind of roles he’s been playing for the past decade — characters who are tough and mysterious, but with a twist.

“I don’t usually wear a suit; I’m used to being the CIA guy in a tank top out in the jungle,” McKenna jokes. “This is a fun twist — more of a Bond-ian type. And getting to build a fresh relationship with Laura’s Carly is a huge bonus.”

A New Chapter

With every script that arrives, McKenna is more excited to explore what’s next for Jack Brennan. His chemistry with Laura Wright, and the dynamic of their evolving relationship, promises a fresh and thrilling direction for the character. Though fans may still be adjusting to the new face of Jack Brennan, McKenna’s passion for the role and dedication to making it his own is clear.

The new Jack Brennan is sure to make an impact. General Hospital viewers, how are you feeling about Chris McKenna stepping into this iconic role? Let us know in the comments!
