Chicago PD Season 9 Finale Makes Upton A Big Hypocrite

The Chicago PD season 9 finale makes Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) a big hypocrite. NBC’s Chicago-set police procedural wrapped up its ninth year with Intelligence finally taking down Los Temidos. However, the team’s win came with some losses, as well, with the death of Hank Voight’s (Jason Beghe) civilian information (CI) Anna Avalos (Carmela Zumbado). As the unit’s leader grieves over the latest tragedy in his life, the demise of Anna could also lead to brand new problems within Intelligence in Chicago PD season 10.

Chicago PD season 9 saw each member of the task force dealing with their respective issues. For Upton, that included coming to terms with accidentally killing a suspect, with Voight and, eventually, Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) covering it up. Collectively, Intelligence channeled all their efforts into taking down the notorious gang, Los Temidos. They needed the help of Anna in accomplishing the job, but while they succeeded, the CI was killed by Upton after going rogue.

Leading to the culmination of Intelligence’s hunt for Los Temidos, Anna starts to be paranoid about gang leader, Javier Escano (José Zúñiga) killing her and her son. So she takes matters into her own hands and murdered him instead. Voight is determined to save his CI, and Halstead is eager to help him, but Upton is against the idea. Firstly, she didn’t think that Anna is worth all the trouble. Secondly, she didn’t want to be part of Voight’s off-the-book operation trying to reach his CI. This makes her a massive hypocrite. In Chicago PD season 7 finale, Tracey Spiridakos’ Hailey Upton had crime boss Darius Walker (Michael Beach) killed after he ordered a hit on her own CI, which was far more brutal than how Anna murdered Escano. It’s also worth remembering that both Voight and Halstead worked rigorously to protect her in the wake of her accidental killing of a suspect in Chicago PD season 8 finale. Voight was willing to take all the blame, and yet, Upton is more than willing to let her boss hang to dry.

How Chicago PD Season 10 Changes Voight & Upton’s Relationship

Chicago pd season 9 finale Annas Fate Hints At Voights End

It’s no secret that Voight was fond of Anna in Chicago PD season 9. It took a while before both got to open up with each other due to their respective traumas, but over time, they established almost a father-daughter dynamic. From Voight’s perspective, it might have something to do with his relationship with Erin Lindsay. Sophia Bush’s Chicago PD character had a special relationship with Voight; aside from being her boss, he also saved her from the streets. Given Voight’s close relationship with Anna, he could inadvertently have some grudges towards Upton for shooting her — even if she only did it to save his life. Learning that Upton wasn’t on-board with saving the CI in the first place could even make things worse for the pair, which could lead to tension within Intelligence.

As integral as the cases they solve, Intelligence’s team dynamic is as fun to watch in Chicago PD. It will be interesting to see how Anna’s death affects Voight and his relationship with Upton. It will be particularly tricky since, for the first time ever, Voight has finally opened up to Halstead, which puts the detective in the middle of his boss and wife’s potential conflict.
