Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story‘s chances at getting a season 2 have been addressed by creator Shonda Rhimes. The six-episode limited series is a prequel to Netflix’s hit romantic drama Bridgerton, which is based on the Julia Quinn novel series of the same name and follows the love lives of the Bridgerton siblings in Regency-era England. Queen Charlotte follows the title character, played in the Bridgerton timeline by Golda Rosheuvel and as a young woman by India Amarteifio, as she navigates her own complicated romance and ascension to the throne when she marries King George.
Recently, Entertainment Weekly sat down with Rhimes to discuss whether there is more story to be told after the Queen Charlotte finale. Although she revealed that there are not currently any ongoing conversations about continuing the series, she played it coy. She said that “I’m not ruling anything out because I never know.” Read her full quote below:
There have been questions, but I’m not having conversations about it yet. I could live with Charlotte and George forever, but we told a very specific, closed-ended story that I think is a complete tale of this complicated, imperfect love. But I’m not ruling anything out because I never know.
What’s Next for the Bridgerton Universe?
Rhimes is no stranger to television series striking upon surprising longevity. Her breakout series Grey’s Anatomy, which premiered in 2006, is still on the air and has spawned its own long-running spinoffs Private Practice, which ran for six seasons, and Station 19, which is at six seasons and counting. Her reluctance to commit to an answer is likely due to her experience with shows becoming runaway successes that stay on the air even without her direct guidance.
It does seem like Bridgerton is primed to be one of those franchises. The train is still rolling, as Bridgerton season 3 is coming soon and the show has already been renewed for season 4 as well. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Queen Charlotte will expand any further.

There is currently no knowing what direction Netflix will eventually choose to take should they decide to keep the franchise going outside of the flagship series. Likely, their decision will become more clear once the series’ first 28 days on the platform are up and the viewership numbers can be properly assessed.
