Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) was bamboozled by another doctor while Simone was forced to face her past on Grey’s Anatomy.
On the April 10 episode of the ABC medical drama, Simone Griffin (Alexis Floyd) was shocked to see a familiar face during ground rounds when Bailey introduced Dr. Joseph Chase, who was planning to perform a “very high risk” surgical resection on a patient named Gabby.
“He got me kicked out of my first residency program,” she told Jules Millin (Adelaide Kane).
Simone then detailed her past interactions with the doctor, explaining, “When he neglected a black patient…I tried to ignore it, but when her symptoms worsened significantly overnight, I told him I was concerned she wasn’t being seen. He informed me…I could go be disrespectful at another program.”
He recalled him calling out her “aggressive behavior” and “subpar surgery skills” during her expulsion review.
After Richard questioned Dr. Chase’s methods, Bailey informed Simone that she would be scrubbing in alongside him on the case.
Seeing Through the Lies
Richard and Bailey were at odds over her decision to bring Dr. Chase onboard. While Bailey said he was “breaking new ground,” Richard insisted that the risk outweighed the benefit of the surgery.
Richard accused Bailey of using their patient as “good lure,” to which Bailey responded, “You think I used Gabby as surgical bait?”
“People go to great lengths to meet the heroes. I know you’ve admired him from afar for years,” Richard added.
Later, Lucas Adams (Niko Terho) suggested that he and Richard would watch Dr. Chase’s surgery, but Richard told him, “I’m not interested in that” and offered an alternative plan — watching his old procedures on VCR tapes.
When Bailey realized Gabby would no longer be part of his study if the procedure was not completed, she told Dr. Chase, “I thought it was unparalleled expertise in steady hands, but it’s cutting and running before there are consequences, at least for you.”
Bailey then demanded Dr. Chase leave the OR as she raced to save the patient — and called Richard for help. “I can’t believe I fell for that man’s snake oil,” she told Simone. “Did you have any idea when you were in Baltimore?”
Before she could answer, Richard arrived with Lucas and they hatched a plan to save Gabby. With Bailey at the helm, they ultimately found a way to successfully perform the surgery.
Bailey later found Richard and told him, “When I first read Chase’s work. I thought it was too good to be true, and I still fell for it.”
“People like Chase prey on our optimism and hope. The indictment’s on him, not you,” he replied.
Simone then confronted Dr. Chase. “You don’t care about teaching, you don’t care about your patients, you only care about you,” she said. “Maybe that gets you published, wins you awards, but it does not make you a good doctor.”
However, he shot back, telling Simone that she could have been “more assertive” with patients and needed to have better surgical skills.
Demanding Answers
After having a change of heart about their open marriage pact, Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) delivered the news to Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd). “I don’t want an open marriage. I almost slept with someone in Oakland, but I couldn’t go through as I am so sorry, but I don’t want to be with anybody else. I only want you,” she said.
He agreed, saying, “Change was worth a try, but I only want to be with you too.”
When she attempted to ask what he meant, they were called to handle a new patient, who arrived at Grey Sloan with an ice pick in his chest. Teddy picked up the conversation while waiting for the results of the patient’s scan. However, Owen reminded her, “We agreed on rules. No details.”
“Why are you accusing me? We opened our marriage, Teddy, and you also were with someone else,” he added.
Meanwhile, they realized the ice pick was essentially keeping the patient from bleeding out and they needed to carefully move him to the OR in order to prevent it from moving. Despite their best efforts, the ice pick shifted and they raced him into surgery, but there was already too much damage and he died.
During a high-stress day at Grey Sloan Memorial, the fates of a patient in critical condition and a helicopter-bound medical team hang in the balance. Teddy and Owen work on their marriage, while Bailey, Blue and Link treat a hospital employee
After losing the patient, Teddy was still upset with Owen, but he called out for her own double standard. “So you’re happy to work in our marriage when it means sleeping with Cass Beckman (Sophia Bush),” he said.
“Oh, I’m sorry, who slept with someone else, not me,” she responded, to which he asked, “What did you think was gonna happen when we opened our marriage?”
When she arrived home, Owen reassured her saying, “I love you. Only you. That night meant nothing.”
