General Hospital had several highs and lows this week, with the most significant low being that surprising recast. Even though Drew and Willow are also one of the lows on the show, at least we didn’t have to see them in bed together! Plus, Carly’s takedown of Drew was an epic moment, as was Nina proposing that she and Carly team up. It feels like we might be getting close to wrapping up Cyrus’ storyline while Jenz’s took a completely unexpected turn.
NuJack Swing
Let’s start with the disappointment of the week, maybe even the year, even though we are only on month two! I’m speaking of replacing Charles Mesure with Chris L. McKenna as Jack Brennan. Sadly, it was Mesure’s choice to leave, but it doesn’t lessen the blow. Mesure is a great actor and added so much snark and sexiness to the character, and he really worked well with Laura Wright (Carly). Time will tell how well McKenna makes the role his, but Mesure will be missed.
Surprise, It’s Gio!
I doubt anyone was shocked when Lois revealed to Martin that Gio was Brook Lynn and Dante’s son, whom she arranged to be adopted by a close relative. Oh, Lois, you did it this time! I understand her first loyalty was to protect Brook Lynn by not telling Dante, Sonny or Olivia. However, secretly keeping their child and grandchild close to all of them, without them knowing, is going to be what is really going to hurt them. She betrayed them all twice!
So It Was Cyrus All Along?
Well, we finally, it appears, have circled back to Pautauk and Austin’s murder at his cabin. It seems it was Cyrus who killed Austin, starting off the beginning of his serial-killing spree. This makes connecting the dots between Austin, the patients at Turning Woods and General Hospital all the more complicated. I’m going out on a limb by saying there is no connection between them, and Cyrus is just a sociopath! Most soap fans need this story to make sense, but in the end, will it? The week concluded, hinting that somehow, this is once again all about Lulu for Cyrus. He blew up, saying too much, including he had done more for her than anyone else ever had. Unless he was referring to trying to pull the plug on her? Or killing Sam so that she could be with Dante?
So let’s see, the list of people who suspect Cyrus is the digitalis killer includes Liz, Lucky, Lucas, Joss, Anna, Chase, Dante and now Rocco and Danny. There was some heavy foreshadowing in the scenes of Rocco telling Danny about Cyrus, Alexis fretting about Jason wanting justice for Sam, and Kristina noting the word vengeance means different things to different people. I can see Danny going after Cyrus, with Jason being the one to stop his son from murdering the man who killed his mother. This would bring Sam’s fears that Danny would follow in Jason’s footsteps full circle.
One Secret Exposed, Several to Go!
Carly’s public takedown of Drew over his sleeping with Michael’s wife in his home while Michael was fighting to recover from burns was epic. The entire scene was just an all-around fantastic performance by the cast, including those who reacted with gasps, and Tracy giggling. It was great to watch the reactions of the others as they learned just how dirty Drew really has become. Of course, Drew went and told the same crowd that Jason knocked up Sasha, which he didn’t, but everyone believes it to be the truth, and Sasha is not helping the matter by refusing to deny it. As I noted in last week’s column, letting this lie continue makes no sense, as it still makes Sasha’s child a Quartermaine, and Jason working for Sonny puts a target on her and her child’s back just the same.
Willow lasted longer than I thought she would in the gatehouse and only fled after being caught bumping uglies with Drew. First in the kids’ nursery, then in the bed she shared with Michael? Have you no shame, Willow? I hope Nina’s set ground rules that they will not be having sexy sleepovers in her apartment!
Carly and Nina working together to bring down Drew is the team-up I’ve been waiting for! This should be good, as long as Carly doesn’t find out that Nina also slept with Drew. Carly wouldn’t hesitate to use that info to blow up Nina, Drew and Willow’s lives if given the chance, though, as she pointed out in Friday’s episode, rocking the boat could cost her access to her grandchildren. Finally, I did not see Nina apologizing to Carly coming and saying watching Drew steamroll Michael and Willow’s marriage made her realize she had done the same thing to Carly. Wow! I’m loving this evolution of sorts for Nina. Of course, we know she’s going to do something to mess things up! She always does…
Plot Twist!
Viewers, myself included, have been more focused on the fact that Jenz can walk around a free man after all he’s done and have been less focused on what he wants in Port Charles. It seems obvious he tried to take Sonny out, and by the end of the week, it appears he’s trying to free up Sonny’s pier for the esplanade Drew’s stalling. That seems like a lot of trouble to go through just to create a beautiful, high-end shopping district in Port Charles!
It was in the final moments of the week we may have been handed a clue as to Jenz’s real interests in Port Charles. Natalia accompanied Sonny to L.A. for his doctor’s appointment, and they learned he needed a pacemaker. With Sonny wanting to keep this a secret, they probably should not have openly discussed it in the waiting area, but that’s soaps for you! Jenz’s stooge overheard and reported back to his boss, but the clincher was that the stooge was following Natalia, not Sonny!
Natalia once hinted to Sonny about her past involving shady characters, and it seems at least one of them is Jenz! So now I’m left wondering, is he the father of one of Natalia’s children? Heck, maybe the kid doesn’t even know? If Blaze was still on the show and with Kristina, this would make for some excellent drama! “My daddy tried to kill your daddy!”
Final Plot-Point Ponderings
Oh look, Anna’s once again not following proper protocol by agreeing to work with Jordan, a civilian, to bring Jenz down. This after lecturing Dante, Jason and Joss about how their going rogue could impede the PCPD’s investigations into the digitalis killer as well as who bombed Sonny’s penthouse.
I really enjoyed Liz and Lucky’s little romantic dance this week and cursed Ric for showing up and interrupting it. Likewise, for once, I did not dread watching scenes with Lucky’s sister, Lulu. Her talk with Dante about Sam and just listening to him was a nice, civil and touching exchange. Of course, with the Gio bomb looming, they won’t have an easy time finding their way back to one another.
I was glad to see Cody come to his senses and not agree to get mixed up with Ms. Wu and her gambling games again, though it seemed apparent that the man who asked for a high-stakes poker game that Selina was speaking about was likely Sidwell. Why do I have a bad feeling Lucky will get drawn into Ms. Wu’s web?
It was nice watching Sasha giving Cody hell for telling half the town that Jason was her baby’s daddy and him apologizing for it. And once again, Cody and Molly just happened to be thrown into a scene together, seemingly solidifying the idea they could be headed toward becoming a couple. For once, I feel Alexis will not approve of Molly’s choices if this happens!
