After a Year of Silence, NCIS Finally Gives an Update on Jane Tennant

Not much has been revealed about Jane Tennant following NCIS: Hawai’i’s cancelation, but NCIS season 22 has fortunately offered a pleasant update. NCIS season 22 has been on a streak of providing updates on canceled spinoffs and past NCIS characters, but episode 18 has upped the ante by hinting at the resolution of NCIS: Hawai’i’s season 3 cliffhanger. The reveal offers some insight into Tennant’s life a year after the show ended.

The abrupt NCIS: Hawai’i finale came after CBS decided to cancel season 4, leaving many questions unanswered indefinitely. The NCIS spinoff was one of the franchise’s more popular ones, making its cancellation even more disappointing. While NCIS: Hawai’i’s future after it ended seems dreary, NCIS season 22 has offered some bittersweet relief in at least one aspect of the show in the most effective way possible.

NCIS season 22, episode 18 brought back LL Cool J’s Sam Hanna, but it also featured several bits of information about other NCIS spinoff characters. One of whom is Jane Tennant. As a result of Hanna’s friendship with the MCRT members, Hanna decides to bake them some desserts while using one of Tennant’s recipes to thank them for their hospitality. When Parker questions Tennant’s baking activities, Hanna replies that with Tennant’s teenage daughter and young adult son, baking “keeps her out of trouble.”

The sweet sentiment is the only mention of Tennant in the episode, but it highlights how great of a parent she is. Throughout NCIS: Hawai’i, Tennant loved and supported her kids in different ways. Her baking can be seen as a loving act of service, as a way to bring peace to potential conflicts, which Hanna joked about. It can also be seen as a way for Tennant to provide and give her kids the care and attention she never received from her own parents. Baking is an act of love and Tennant’s actions prove that.

The NCIS: Hawai’i season 3 finale was about to end on a positive note with Tennant reuniting with her family after a stressful day at work when Maggie Shaw appeared instead. When Tennant returned home hoping to see her daughter, Shaw told her that her daughter Julie was not there and that Jane would probably “need a drink for what’s coming next.” The NCIS: Hawai’i cliffhanger implied terrible consequences for Jane’s family, particularly for her young daughter. With no guaranteed next season, the ending was left open by CBS with no chance of reversing it.

While there is still no update about what exactly happened to Julie and what Shaw meant, Hanna’s information in NCIS season 22, episode 18, has revealed that Tennant’s kids are safe. It is small but has a major impact. Whatever happened immediately after the NCIS: Hawai’i series finale is not irreversible, but it’s great to know that Tennant is happy, safe, and loving home. This does not make up for the spinoff’s cancelation, but it does offer some relief.

The update about Tennant’s family might also hint that her family was safe all along and that Shaw had just placed her daughter in a safe place as a precaution. Another option is that Julie could have been out with some friends or family and Shaw just wanted a private conversation with Tennant before she came back. Whatever the case, Tennant’s family is officially safe, which provides some solace after the frustrating cliffhanger.

Can Tennant Eventually Return In NCIS?
Tennant Can Return In A Variety Of Ways

Tennant can still return to NCIS as a guest star. LL Cool J’s return as Sam Hanna has solidified the belief that former spinoff stars can return to the franchise, which opens the possibility for many other characters from canceled spinoffs to come back as well. Tennant has a great relationship with MCRT as well. During their crossover episodes, she proved that she was an excellent agent. She recently supported McGee’s children’s coffee fundraiser in NCIS season 22, episode 13.

Tennant’s return is also possible in one other way. Other than being a fantastic agent, Tennant also has great chemistry with NCIS’ Nick Torres. A Tennant and Torres NCIS romance could then pave the way to seeing her return more frequently to NCIS. Torres is currently dating Knight’s sister, Robin, but their recent conflicts have hinted at their differences, which might push him towards seeking a partner on a similar career path if they were to break up. If that is the case, Tennant would make the perfect choice.
