S.W.A.T star Shemar Moore teases season 7’s swan song, which also doubles as a new beginning after the show’s unexpected renewal. The action drama series, which follows Los Angeles Police Department Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson (Moore) and his unit, has now surprisingly twice survived cancellation. SWAT season 7 was not originally planned to happen, only for the decision to be reversed and for it to be announced as the final season. And then, back in April, with the last episode just weeks away, CBS shifted course and announced that it was renewing S.W.A.T for season 8.
At a recent event for CBS, Moore spoke with Deadline about S.W.AT season 8’s unexpected renewal. Though the lead actor mentioned that there were still three episodes left to film, he offered a preview of what sounds like a bombastic ending to season 7. In the quote below, Moore also says that the upcoming finale works both as a swan song and a new beginning:
We were smart. At the tail end of the strike, me and the producers and the writers got together at my house and I said, ‘Ok, what are we going to do this year?’ I said, ‘If this is it, let’s go out with a bang. Let’s give them our signature. Let’s give them the action: helicopters, chase scenes, motorcycle chases, fight scenes, Hondo sprinting through an alley. Let’s rock them.’
We have three episodes left to finish [airing] this season. So when you get to the finale, you’ll see we shaped it in a way that it’s either our swan song or our new beginning. We literally didn’t change anything in the writing.
