Jeremy plays a central role in this episode, wherein he comes to the ER after complaining of heartburn. After Dr. Pierce rules out a heart attack and aortic dissection, Jeremy’s case is handed to Dr. Bailey. Bailey runs some tests to discover the cause of his pain.

After Jeremy becomes insistent on getting out of the hospital and back to work as soon as possible, he directly undergoes an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). The EGD eventually reveals a large tumor, which the doctors conclude is adenocarcinoma. The doctors also discovered that Jeremy’s diet had caused massive acid reflux, resulting in his esophagus becoming the perfect spot for a cancerous growth.

The doctors then plan an esophagectomy, which involves removing part of Jeremy’s esophagus along with the tumor and replacing it with part of his colon. Unfortunately, Jeremy ends up dying shortly after they begin his surgery, devastating Erin and her mother.
