The 32-year-old hunk portrays Christian Grey in the erotic film – based on the book by E L James – which sees the wealthy entrepreneur take student Anastasia Steel, portrayed by Dakota Johnson, on a voyage of sexual discovery.
When Jamie told his wife Amelia he had been offered the part she was pregnant with their 14-month-old daughter Dulcie, but he insists she was fully supportive of him appearing in the controversial flick.
Speaking in the new U.K. issue of OK! magazine, he said: ”My wife is a brilliant, hugely understanding person. She was an actress for 10 years, so she’s aware of what it’s like. A lot of people would have had a (expletive) fit at 30-something weeks pregnant hearing, ‘Darling, we’re going to Vancouver this week for four months – we’re going to have a Canadian baby and I’m going to do a film where, for parts of it, I will be naked.’ That’s a tough pitch, but my wife is an incredible person.”
Jamie has previously admitted he is concerned about the attention the role will attract and has even expressed a fear an obsessive fan could harm him, but despite his reservations he always wanted to play Christian.
He added: ”I’m happy to have this chance to play this character. I know it’s going to be a controversial film but I don’t think it’s anti-feminist, as some people have been insinuating. The sex and the relationship is all consensual and contractual … I like playing characters who are fractured, broken. I find that more relatable for some reason.”
