Lucas in Danger and a Surprising Twist in Grey’s Anatomy

In Thursday’s Grey’s Anatomy, Lucas took desperate measures in hopes of convincing Catherine to reverse her decision to make him repeat his first year as an intern: He volunteered to be on her service! Did he succeed in changing her mind where even Bailey had failed? Let’s get into it.

WINSTON AND JULES THREW SPARKS | As “Bust Your Windows” began, Richard had no sooner said that “I just need a normal workday” when the window washer that the peds ward saw as a superhero — hey, the cape didn’t hurt — got blown by a blustery day straight into the waiting room. Glass everywhere, and on top of that, Beau the Window Washer was bleeding from his carotid. While on the operating table, Beau developed a blood clot, which Winston handled so speedily that Jules was left awestruck. He’d just walked a tightrope without a net, she marveled. Not so much, he replied. He’d built up his confidence as a surgeon but was scared s—tless of heights. In hopes of getting him over that fear, Jules took him to Grey Sloan’s roof to show him how small problems on the ground looked when he was above them. Sparks flew. He gazed at her a little longer than a colleague would and offered her his jacket when she caught a chill. Afterward, even Richard sensed that something was brewing. Be careful on the roof, he advised. “You never know what could happen up there.” Don’t we, though? Don’t we all know what could happen up there?

At Meredith’s old house, Blue ticked off Simone by letting a guy who was barely an almost acquaintance crash there without telling her. As kids will do, the interns brought their conflict to work, where they so annoyed Richard that he kicked Kwan out of the O.R. “You treat our home like it’s your bachelor pad,” Griffith later told her roommate. Yeah? Well, “no one wants a couple making out across the breakfast table,” he countered. In the end, though, inspired by a couple of squabbling siblings, Simone and Blue kissed and made up. OK, not kissed. (I should be clear about that; you never know on Grey’s!) He even gave the all-clear for her to invite Lucas to move back in. What? Somebody had to pay the utilities.

LUCAS DID HIS DAMNEDEST TO WOW CATHERINE | When Bailey balked at the idea of spending a date night with Ben quizzing him for his boards, he took his wife’s advice and tried to make friends with a fellow resident. Alas, Helm wouldn’t give him the time of day. “I don’t have the time of day to give,” she explained. But the two of them still managed to bond as they adopted the roles of Super Surgeon and Dr. Whipple to cheer up a 9-year-old patient who needed to fart to prove that his intestines had been sufficiently awakened post-surgery. Helm even let Ben do her the “favor” of agreeing to cram for their boards with her.

As for Lucas and his remediation… Well, Richard hadn’t talked to his missus on his behalf after all. He’d sensed that it would do more harm than good. But he did get Adams assigned to the clinic… where Catherine just happened to be working that day. Lucas played the eager beaver to the hilt to dazzle Dr. Fox. But his one big shot came via a teenage patient faced with “medieval” methods for treating menstrual flow that had been trapped in her uterus. “You want to impress me, Dr. Adams? Do something impressive,” Catherine told him. Find a better option. Not only did Lucas do so, he bailed on the procedure owing to the patient’s discomfort with having a cute male doctor see her privates. Owing to that display of “sensitivity and good judgment,” Catherine informed him that “you can remain with your class.” No repeat of his first year needed.

As the hour wrapped up, Lucas shared the good news with Simone… who then refrained from asking him to move back in. Maybe she was spooked by his talk of doing their fellowship together? What’s your take? And what do you think of Jules and Winston as a potential couple? (Me likey.)
