Ever since Grey’s Anatomy introduced Winston and Jules’ relationship in season 19, I’ve felt like there was something special brewing between them. While the show was simply showing Jules showing interest and enthusiasm in working with Winston, I couldn’t help but pick up on the subtle signs that the show was building toward that. When Jules expressed her admiration for Winston and expressed her desire to learn from him, part of me suspected that there was more to their relationship than just a working relationship. “Never say never,” showrunner Meg Marinis told TVLine at the time, hinting that their relationship could go further, and that there was certainly no limit to the types of relationships the show could explore.
Now, with this latest development in season 21, my suspicions have been confirmed. Winston is not only Jules’ guide, but also her helper in small situations, like when she discovers that he doesn’t like heights. And so, in a gentle but meaningful moment, Jules pulls Winston up to the hospital roof to enjoy the view together. It’s a scene that’s more than just a casual date, but a sign that their relationship is growing beyond the boundaries of friendship or co-workers. Their bond begins to become more evident, as Winston looks at Jules in a somewhat different way, a long, curious look, not that of a regular colleague.
In particular, the moment when Winston generously offers his coat to Jules when she feels cold, seems to demonstrate their growing care and connection. For a man who has just gone through a failed marriage with Maggie and a woman like Jules, with her intelligence and strength, this relationship can bring them both a sense of peace and normalcy amidst all the turmoil in their lives. After the shocks in their lives — Winston just ended his painful marriage with Maggie, and Jules suffered a sense of loss after Mika’s death — I feel that they both deserve a gentle, healthy, happy relationship. While this relationship may not last long in the difficult world of Grey’s Anatomy, they absolutely deserve to have joy and peace in those short moments.
I hope that, at least for a short time, this relationship will develop naturally and bring them moments of happiness. Perhaps in a hospital as full of drama and turmoil as Grey’s Anatomy, these relationships will be tested and inevitably face hardships. However, hopefully Winston and Jules will be able to build a true love amidst all that turmoil. After all, good things and love can sometimes be found in the most seemingly chaotic places.
I really love this idea. While I know that Grey’s Anatomy doesn’t always allow relationships like this to last forever, I believe that the relationship between Winston and Jules will bring a new wave of excitement in the upcoming episodes, especially in the context of all the characters going through major challenges and changes in their lives. Will their love grow stronger, or will some shock cause everything to fall apart? That is the question that will be answered in the upcoming episodes of the show.
