‘Will Trent’ Confirms Surprise Character Exit — But Hints at Season 4 Return
One of the most talked-about new additions to Will Trent Season 3 won’t be sticking around — at least not for now.
Despite a promising debut and growing chemistry with Ramón Rodríguez’s title character, Marion Alba — played by Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez — will not appear in the remainder of Season 3. The news was confirmed by co-showrunner Liz Heldens, who explained that the season’s expanded 18-episode order allowed for bigger storytelling, but not enough room to give every character a full arc.
“Marion is not going to resurface before season’s end,” Heldens told TVLine. “When we started [Season 3], we were like, ‘Oh, 18 episodes is the biggest order we’ve ever done!’ And then when we got to the end, we were like, ‘We don’t have enough runway for everybody.'”
Still, it’s not a definitive goodbye. Heldens praised Rodriguez’s performance and teased the possibility of her return next season: “I think that Gina Rodriguez is wonderful. She pops off the screen. We love her… and I wouldn’t rule out her coming back in Season 4 at all.”
What This Means for Will Trent’s Final Episodes
While Marion quickly became a fan-favorite presence — offering a rare glimpse into Will’s softer, more romantic side — the breakup in Episode 12 marked a turning point. With the relationship ended, Will has returned to his emotionally closed-off default, throwing himself back into cases and avoiding vulnerability.
As Will Trent builds toward its Season 3 finale at the end of April, the narrative spotlight appears to be shifting toward more high-stakes threads: the fallout from Rafael Wexford’s storyline, Amanda’s sudden solo status, and Michael Ormewood’s brain tumor diagnosis — a development that could reshape the unit permanently.
Given the emotional depth of these arcs, and the limited number of episodes left, it’s understandable that Marion’s story will remain paused for now.
Could Marion Return in Season 4?
Don’t count her out just yet. While her absence in the back half of Season 3 is disappointing to some fans, the door is clearly open for a comeback. Rodriguez brought a fresh energy to the show, and her character played a crucial role in coaxing Will out of his emotional shell — something few others have managed.
Her return in Season 4 could reignite that personal journey, especially if Will is ready to risk his heart again. Whether Marion becomes Will’s long-term romantic partner or remains a pivotal “what if” moment, it’s clear that the character made an impact — both on the audience and the writers.
With Will Trent already renewed for a fourth season, there’s still hope for more Marion and Will in the future. It may just be a matter of timing, availability, and finding the right story to bring her back.
