Jennifer Aniston at the Center of a Nepotism Uproar – What’s Really Going On Behind the Scenes?

After Bollywood’s nepotism debate was fuelled by Kangana Ranaut during her Koffee With Karan appearance, now the conversation has travelled overseas to Hollywood. Friends actress Jennifer Aniston, who is known for playing Rachel Green in the hit 90s and early 2000s show, is being slammed for being a “nepotism baby.”

It all happened when Jennifer did an interview with Variety in which she mourned the fact that people get famous through Instagram and TikTok these days.

How did the conversation lead to her disapproval of social media celebrities?

Jennifer was in a conversation with Sebastian Stan, discussing his film Pam And Tommy, which is about Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s relationship and especially their sex tape, which was leaked to the public in the 90s, causing a huge scandal.

Speaking about that, Jennifer said, “It was right at the time when the internet was just sort of becoming… it really shaped so much of a new culture of people becoming famous for basically doing nothing. But yet having these incredible careers, and then women’s, sort of, reputation, I mean Pam, Paris Hilton… More people, you’re famous from TikTok, you’re famous from YouTube, you’re famous from Instagram. It’s almost like it’s diluting the actor’s job.”

Why did people call her out for this?

The internet wasn’t happy about Jennifer Aniston questioning the means through which other people got famous because she had famous parents herself. Both her parents Nancy Dow and John Aniston happened to be actors, which is why people called her a nepotism baby, and accused her of getting an entry into the world of acting with the help of her parents.

they’re so mad they can’t gatekeep the title of celebrity to stay in their weird nepotism Hollywood elite ? https://t.co/2VdahZGDxd

However, while Jennifer’s father John was a soap opera star who appeared in Days Of Our Lives, neither of Jennifer’s parents were A-listers or Oscar-winning celebrities, so there were some who said that they couldn’t have had a huge part to play in her success.

That said, there is a flaw in Jennifer’s argument that is worth calling out.

Why is Jennifer wrong in slamming social media celebrities?

Social media is a democratic platform through which anyone with an internet connection can showcase their talent for the world to see. For people who don’t live in a big city or know filmmakers personally, this is a major way to get recognition and create content for a large audience. To slam people for getting famous through social media is, therefore, a bit elitist.

Not only that, but the shame-y tone with which a hardworking celebrity like Paris Hilton was slammed is uncalled for. Paris has a lot of business ventures and has diversified her professional life to include many different sources of income for herself, ranging from DJ-ing gigs, a perfume line, party appearances, a singing career, a show on Netflix, a skincare line, and loads of other things. She’s clearly not raking in the moolah by doing nothing, is she?

At the end of the day, a social media celebrity who is hired for a movie role will only be given that place if the producer is willing to bet on their talent. No one from TikTok is going to replace Meryl Streep in a movie anytime soon because both have their own niche, their own space. So, it’s highly unlikely that a real actor’s job could get diluted by the existence of influencers.
