Donnie Wahlberg to Lead New ‘Blue Bloods’ Spin-Off Series, Boston Blue

Donnie Wahlberg is set to return to the small screen in a new spin-off of the hit show Blue Bloods, titled Boston Blue. CBS made the announcement on Tuesday, February 18, revealing that Wahlberg, who portrayed NYPD officer Danny Reagan on the original series, will reprise his role for the 2025-26 broadcast season.

The new series will follow Wahlberg’s character as he takes on a new chapter in his career with the Boston Police Department. After relocating to Boston, Danny Reagan will partner with Detective Lena Peters, played by an as-yet-unnamed actress. Peters is the eldest daughter of a well-established law enforcement family, adding layers of complexity to the crime-solving duo’s dynamic. According to CBS, this shift to Boston will offer a fresh perspective on Reagan’s investigative style, all while staying true to the compelling family drama that made Blue Bloods a fan favorite.

Wahlberg’s return to the role of Danny Reagan marks a significant development for the character. Fans of Blue Bloods will be pleased to see Wahlberg’s character tackle new cases and navigate a different city’s criminal landscape while maintaining his signature charisma and no-nonsense attitude. This will be Wahlberg’s first time playing the character outside of the familiar NYC setting, opening the door to new challenges and opportunities for his seasoned detective.

The Boston Blue series comes at an exciting time for Wahlberg, who was nominated for a People’s Choice Award in 2017 for his portrayal of Danny Reagan in Blue Bloods. The show, which has become a staple of CBS’ lineup, has built a loyal fanbase thanks to its gripping storylines and strong performances from its cast, particularly Wahlberg’s portrayal of a dedicated yet often troubled cop. His new role in Boston Blue promises to continue his legacy in crime dramas while offering a fresh narrative arc for audiences to enjoy.

While a premiere date for Boston Blue is yet to be confirmed, fans of Blue Bloods can expect a high-stakes, drama-filled ride as Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan once again finds himself embroiled in complex cases. The show is produced by CBS Studios in partnership with JBTV, and the creative team behind the series includes showrunners Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, as well as executive producers Jerry Bruckheimer, KristieAnne Reed, and Wahlberg himself.

In addition to his work on Boston Blue, Wahlberg continues to keep busy in the entertainment world. He recently appeared in a hilarious Super Bowl commercial for Dunkin’ titled DunKings 2: The Movie, alongside fellow Boston natives Ben Affleck, Casey Affleck, and Jeremy Strong. Furthermore, Wahlberg and his New Kids on the Block bandmates announced their first-ever Las Vegas residency, slated to take place at the Dolby Live at Park MGM in June.

As fans eagerly await the debut of Boston Blue, Wahlberg’s return to television promises to bring a familiar yet exciting twist to the world of Blue Bloods, expanding the beloved franchise in thrilling new directions.
