The Most Recent Episode of NCIS Shows Why We Need More of Jess, Robin, and Kasie.

Spanning over 400 episodes and 22 seasons, NCIS has become a hallmark in the procedural drama genre, with a rotating cast of main characters and guest stars. While procedural shows can sometimes grow repetitive, NCIS maintains its appeal through its well-rounded and evolving characters. The Major Crimes Response Team (MCRT) has seen various team members come and go, but the series consistently focuses on the emotional ties that form between individuals, showing that a family doesn’t always have to be defined by blood but by shared experiences and support.

A key example of this deepening bond appears in NCIS Season 22, Episode 16, “Ladies Night.” In this episode, Jessica Knight (Katrina Law), Robin Knight (Lilan Bowden), and Kasie Hines (Diona Reasonover) attempt to take a break from their demanding jobs to spend a relaxing evening together. However, Jess and Kasie struggle to let go of a current case, and the night turns tense when Robin’s frustrations about her relationship with Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) bubble to the surface. Though opinions may vary on the compatibility of Robin and Torres, the episode offers a welcome exploration of the women’s lives outside of their professional roles. The focus on their personal struggles gives a much-needed balance to the show, which has often sidelined the personal lives of characters like Jess and Kasie.

Season 22 of NCIS has ventured into more character-driven episodes, which is a refreshing change from the traditional case-of-the-week format. While Torres and Alden Parker (Gary Cole) have been the center of many of these stories, this episode offers an opportunity for Jess and Kasie to shine. When Robin, who’s frustrated with the disruption to her plans, looks closely at crime scene photos and spots a crucial detail — the misarranged stones on a chakra statue — it becomes clear that the women, despite not being officially assigned to the case, have uncovered the key to solving the crime. Their involvement in cracking the case adds an unexpected twist, and it would have been interesting for the entire episode to focus solely on the women instead of also splitting attention with the men’s off-the-clock antics.

The heart of this episode lies in the bond between Jessica, Robin, and Kasie. Although Jess and Robin are sisters, their relationship was initially marked by typical sibling tension. However, that dynamic shifted after a traumatic hostage situation in Season 20, which brought Jess and Robin closer and incorporated Kasie into their tight-knit group. As Diona Reasonover, who plays Kasie, shared in a recent interview, the ordeal was a pivotal moment that strengthened their relationship. After enduring such a harrowing experience, it’s clear that their connection is unbreakable.

Though Jess and Robin are sisters by blood, Kasie has become an integral part of their “chosen” family. Over time, their friendship has evolved, especially after Jess joined the team in Season 19. Their bond grew even stronger following the hostage situation, cementing Kasie’s place as someone who is just as important as family. This episode highlights how deeply their connection has grown, with Kasie now considered by Jess to be as close as a sister.

As NCIS continues its long run, it’s vital for the series to continue developing its female characters. Historically, the main cast has been predominantly male, and although there have been notable guest appearances from women, like Robin and Victoria Palmer (Elle Graper), there is still a lack of women in central roles. This imbalance is even more noticeable when considering that the female characters, such as Ziva David (Cote de Pablo), faced limited development in later seasons before their departures.

“Ladies Night” succeeds in showing the personal growth and challenges of Jess, Kasie, and Robin, offering viewers a deeper connection to these characters. If Robin and Torres really part ways, it could be the first time the trio of women are all single at the same time, which could open up interesting storylines for their friendships. As NCIS approaches its landmark 500th episode in Season 23, there’s hope that the series will continue to explore and strengthen the bond between Jess, Robin, and Kasie. This would be a fresh and welcome direction for the show, highlighting the importance of female friendships without relying on romantic storylines to drive the narrative.
