During a recent interview with People, Pompeo admitted that while the financial stability provided by the role has been a major benefit, the repetitiveness of the show is among the challenges she faces. Despite the show’s success, Pompeo has voiced her desire for more creative changes, though she recognizes the show’s reliance on familiar formulas to maintain its widespread appeal. Check out the interview below:
Well, the best thing is the financial security, if I’m being very honest. It’s been very lucrative, and I think financial security is not something that every actress has afforded, so I’m very grateful for that. The hardest thing is just the repetitive nature of doing the same thing over and over. You know, there’s a familiarity with Grey that people love. So, we can’t change it too much. I mean, I would love to change it so much. I’m always like, “Let’s do this, and let’s do that!” and they’re like, “Shut up, Ellen, we’re not doing that.”

Additionally, Grey’s Anatomy’s repetitiveness is a common challenge faced by actors involved in long-running series. As the series maintains its storytelling format, the risks of creative burnout are unavoidable. Given Pompeo’s comments, the balance between sticking to the formula and introducing new elements is tricky. This ongoing tension is a key aspect of Grey’s Anatomy’s production, especially as Pompeo has become one of the few remaining original cast members in Grey’s Anatomy, alongside Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey) and James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber).

Pompeo Offers An Honest Reflection On Being A Part Of Grey’s Anatomy
While Pompeo is still part of Grey’s Anatomy as narrator, producer and even appearing onscreen as Meredith, her new show couldn’t be more different.
It’s admirable how candid Pompeo is at answering a tricky question. However, it’s also worth noting that a big part of Grey’s Anatomy‘s success stems from the work that she and her legacy castmates have put in during the earlier years of the series. Granted that the majority of them have moved on, it’s very important to acknowledge their contributions as Grey’s Anatomy continues to be a major hit for the network and why it has found a steady audience on streaming. For what it’s worth, Pompeo has earned the right to be honest about her feelings regarding the show.

Grey’s Anatomy Has Other Storylines To Tackle
This allows her to pursue other endeavors, including Hulu’s Good American Family — Pompeo’s very first lead role outside of Grey’s Anatomy. The project allows her to really flex her acting muscles; not that the medical drama hasn’t been challenging for her, but as the actor said herself, it can get repetitive. While there’s nothing wrong with owning a role the way she has done in the last 2 decades as a creative, it’s understandable that she is seeking other ventures. While she fuels that side of her, Grey’s Anatomy can stand on its own, waiting for her to come back.
